Location, Location, Location: Governors' Unique Advantage
It’s no surprise this camp has been thriving for all these years—it’s all thanks to its location. This isn’t some fly-by-night operation—it’s got a pioneering history that’s the stuff of legend. The camp was first established in 1972, making it the first permanent luxury tented camp in the Masai Mara.
They picked a spot back then, and that’s the same one they still have – and it’s a beauty, not because it’s in some out-of-the-way conservancy that you have to trek through to get to the real wildlife action. Nope, Governors’ Camp is literally right on the banks of the Mara River, slap bang in the middle of the Masai Mara National Reserve, right next to the incredible Musiara Marsh.
You can’t overstate how much time that saves you on those daily game drives. You’re already right in the thick of it, where the real action is – and that is just priceless. That’s why Governors’ Camp is always so highly rated – its location is without a doubt the key to its success.
The Thrill of the Unfenced Safari
One thing that never fails to get people’s hearts racing – and a little anxious – is the Governors’ Camp’s refusal to put up a fence around its borders. The camp was set up that way to give you the chance to really connect with the wild and get a true sense of what an authentic safari is all about. There’s nothing quite like sitting on your veranda one minute and then looking up to see an elephant wandering through the camp or a hippo munching grass nearby after a nighttime swim.
We all love the sense of immersion that comes with an unfenced camp—it’s one of the reasons people come back year after year. But, of course, the camp has to be taken seriously. There are clear rules about what you can and can’t do when it’s dark – no wandering off on your own, for instance. But that’s part of the deal – you get to feel like you’re really at one with the wild – and you get to do it all while knowing that a Maasai askari is always on hand to keep you safe after sundown. It’s a big part of what makes a stay here so unforgettable.
The Unofficial Big Cat Research Base
So, you might be wondering how the guides here get so good at tracking down lions and leopards—well, it starts with the camp’s history. The connection to the Big Cat Diary is massive. For years, the BBC team who made that classic documentary series used Governors’ Camp as their base—they needed a camp that could deliver the goods when it came to big cat sightings—and they chose it perfectly.
The fact that the current guides here have been learning from some of the original trackers for years means that they’ve got a level of knowledge and understanding of the land that is just unmatched. Whether you’re a serious wildlife photographer or just keen to get as much of a glimpse of those elusive predators as you possibly can, you’ve come to the right place.
Living Under Canvas: A Taste of Luxury Safari Life
When I talk about this place being a top-notch luxury safari experience in the Masai Mara, I’m talking about a particular kind of under-canvas comfort that’s far more than your average camping trip. Sure, it’s about keeping it simple, but it’s more about finding that perfect balance between being in the midst of all that wild beauty and still getting a decent night’s sleep.
With 37 of these luxury tents, each is a sizeable affair, beautifully decked out on the inside and designed to look and feel like a classic safari outpost from a bygone era. I’ve always liked how they’ve managed to marry the thrill of being in the wild with top-notch guest care.
The Canvas Comforts of ‘Home from Home’
Each of the well-spaced-out tents is like your own little hideaway with a beautiful view to boot. They are entirely under canvas but built on proper, solid foundations. Inside you’ll find everything you need: a comfy bed, some gorgeous African textiles, and a proper en-suite bathroom – toilet included, with reliable hot running water, because let’s face it, it’s always a must.
And of course you’ll need to keep your gadgets charged, so I can confirm you’ve got easily accessible 220V charging ports (UK plugs, easy peasy). When booking, think about what you want to see first thing in the morning. The River-view Tents are absolute gold for watching the hippos, but the Plains-view tents offer stunning sunrise views.
And for all you couples out there, the secluded Justus Suite is usually included in a beautiful honeymoon package at Governors’ Camp. And for families, they’ve got specially designed larger Family Tents.
A Taste of the Wild: Where You Eat & Socialise
The food is basically top-notch, and one of the best parts is where you eat it—it’s actually excellent. You’ll be on a full board basis. That means cracking continental and full English breakfasts after the early morning drive, tasty alfresco lunches on the lawn, and a beautifully set four-course dinner in the main dining tent, usually candlelit, which is lovely.
And of course, don’t forget the fun extras like a bush breakfast or a memorable bush dinner (sometimes optional extras, but worth checking out; some people just love them). The Bar Tent overlooking the Mara River is the real heart of the camp, where you’ll be hanging out for those quintessential sundowners. And for those midday breaks, you can pop into the Spa Tent for a massage, have a look in the gift shop, or even check out some Wi-Fi in the main areas.
But I guarantee you’ll soon forget all about that once the game viewing starts.
The Thrill of the Mara: Our Safari Adventures
The activities plan is all about making the most of your time with the wildlife. And here’s where our camp’s location, bang in the middle of the reserve, really comes into its own. You’re just a few seconds away from the main event. We fit in up to 3 game drives a day—that’s how much time we want you to spend getting up close and personal with the locals.
And with our 4×4 vehicles with open sides, you’ll soon see why our game drives are so highly thought of – our guides are simply the best. They’re not just drivers; they’re experts in tracking and explaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
The Great Migration: A Natural Wonder
Planning a trip to see the Great Wildebeest Migration between July and October? Well, you’re in the right place at the right time. The sheer scale of this event is enough to leave you breathless. Our spot right on the river gives you the best chance to witness a Mara River crossing —one of the most intense and awe-inspiring sights you’ll ever see.
This is the peak season for a reason, and while our prices might be a bit higher than usual, the experience is one to remember for a lifetime. Even if you can’t make it during peak season, our resident wildlife population here ensures you still get some of the best game viewing in the business.
Our Exclusive Ways to Experience the Mara
Beyond the usual drives, we’ve got some pretty special ways to get a glimpse of this beautiful landscape:
Hot Air Balloon Safari
This is the one thing everyone asks about. The Governors’ Balloon Safaris do an incredible job, and it’s an absolute must-do. There’s something magical about lifting off just as the sun is rising and drifting silently over the plains. And the champagne breakfast that comes with it? Bliss. Yes, it’s an extra cost, but trust us, it’s worth every penny.
Guided Safaris
For anyone who wants to really get up close and personal with the wildlife, our guided walks (led by armed, experienced guides, no less) are a must. And if you’re a keen photographer, our guides know all the best spots to get the perfect shot.
Spotting the Big Five
With so many incredible animals living just a stone’s throw away, your chances of spotting the Big Five are high. I, personally, have seen more leopards in this part of the reserve than almost anywhere else, which is all the more reason to come and see what all the fuss is about.
Planning the Perfect Safari: Logistics, What to Budget For and What You Need to Know
A safari is all about having a seamless experience from start to finish, and my role is to make sure your only worry is recharging your camera batteries. Everything else should just fall into place. When looking at Governors’ Camp prices, keep in mind that there’s a lot more to the cost than what first meets the eye. You need to know precisely what you are getting value for your money and what to budget for on top.
Getting There and Choosing the Best Time to Go
The best time to visit Governors’ Camp really depends on what kind of experience you are after. Are you in it for the drama of Migration season, or do you prefer a more relaxed pace during the Green Season, when the prices are lower and the park is lush and green?
One thing that isn’t up for debate, though, is getting here; in my experience, flying in from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the local Musiara Airstrip is the way to go – they’ll meet you there and you can be on your first game drive in no time. It beats a long and tiring road transfer every time.
Making Sense of Your Safari Costs
When you see the prices for Governors’ Camp for the first time, bear in mind that you get a lot for your money. This is what you can expect to be included, and what you need to budget for separately:
- So you get:
- Full board (all meals)
- Game drives around Governors’ Camp
- A few drinks (local beers, house wines and soft drinks
- Your laundry is taken care of
- And they’ll meet you at the airstrip
- But you’ll need to pay extra for:
- The park fees in the Masai Mara
- The Hot Air Balloon Safari
- Premium drinks
- Tips (gratuities). Budget for these before you go.
One more thing: as a non-resident, you’ll need to sort out an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for Kenya before you arrive – it’s replaced the old visa system. And don’t forget to sort out any health requirements with your doctor before you leave (malaria meds, etc.) – and, as always, listen to the camp team on safety—they know what they are talking about.
Beyond the Tents – Governors’ Camp and What Sets it Apart
What makes this place stand out is the genuine dedication to conservation and the local community that you can really feel here. When you visit, you’re not just a tourist; you’re putting your weight behind something that makes a real difference. The fact that Governors’ has such a long history of good works is something you notice right away – it’s not just some slogan – that’s absolute authority.
The Responsible Bit – A Low Footprint in the Mara
Governors’ Camp Masai Mara has always taken great pride in leaving the place as it found it. They’ve got a silver/gold eco-rating for their sustainability efforts, which isn’t easy to get. But that’s not all—they also support a range of wildlife initiatives, including the Mara Predator Project and the Mara-Meru Cheetah Project.
And here’s the thing, your visit is helping to fund all that. Plus, they’re part of the local community, which is a big part of the Governors’ experience. When you visit the Maasai, you’re not just getting a tour – you’re putting your money into the local school and medical centre.
Governors’ Camp Collection – What’s the Difference?
Of course, when you’re researching all the choices out there, it’s worth taking a closer look at what Governors’ Masai Mara has to offer. They’ve got different camps to suit different tastes – the original Governors’ is the one most people think of when they hear the name; Governors’ Il Moran is a bit more exclusive and high-end; and Little Governors’ is a more low-key, intimate affair.
And suppose you’re comparing Governors’ to other places like Mara Serena or Mara Plains, well, Governors’ is just in a whole different league. In that case, it’s classic, high-quality accommodation, right in the heart of the reserve.
When you think about it, that’s what Governors’ gets right that so many others don’t. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can’t buy the kind of history and knowledge that Governors’ has. That’s why their rating is always so high—they just do it better.

Kenneth K Wrote a Review May 2025 – Sun Kissed at the Mara
“The Governors’ camp is tucked away in the middle of the Mara near the great Mara River wildebeest migration crossing. The camp is serene and quiet, and not far from the airstrip. If you plan to do the hot-air balloon, this is the place because the launch is inside the compound. The tented camps have all amenities, with security being a top priority.
Inside the camps, we got lucky to experience a family of Elephants grazing peacefully. The Manager & staff are super friendly. The meals were not as good as I had seen and expected much from them. Overall, I had a great time and would definitely recommend them to anyone.
P.S. Two nights is not enough, 3 nights and above would be ideal.”
Bilty Wrote a Review Sep 2025 Fantastic Stay.
“Just had a fantastic stay at Governors camp, the stay far exceeded our expectations. The staff are great and friendly. Michael served us, Daniel served our drinks, not forgetting Moses at the bar, and everyone else, including security, made our stay fabulous.
Veronica, our guide, was excellent, making sure we got the best out of our stay. She is so knowledgeable, an asset to the camp. The tents were so comfortable, and the food was delicious. A fantastic experience made even more special by the care and service from all staff at the camp.”
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Looking for more info about Governor’s Camp? I’ve answered some of the questions that people usually ask about this camp.
Is Governors’ Camp worth the money?
In my book, the answer is a resounding yes. The real value of Governors’ Camp is that it’s situated right in the Masai Mara National Reserve, which means you’re not spending a bunch of time travelling to get to the good bits and can get on with the game viewing – especially during the Great Migration, when the whole place is just full of animals.
Do they have private safari vehicles at the camp?
Yes, while the base package includes shared game drives in the Governors’ Camp Land Cruisers, you can also arrange a private vehicle for your group. This is a good idea to do in advance, as they’re popular.
When is the best time to see the Mara River crossing?
If you want to see the Mara River crossing in all its glory, you’re best off coming during the peak season (Migration time, which is July to October). Although you have to remember that nature’s pretty unpredictable, you should plan to stay for a few days to make sure you catch it when it happens.
How does the camp feel about kids, and how safe is it?
Actually, Governors’ Camp is pretty great for families, because they have Family Tents—and while it’s a pretty unfenced environment, the staff are pretty strict about keeping an eye on the little ones after dark.
Are all drinks included in the Governor’s Camp rates?
The standard rates cover the basics—so you get soft drinks, house wines, local beers, and standard spirits without paying any extra—but the premium stuff, or imported wines and champagne, is going to cost a bit more.
Do I need to sort out my own transfers from Nairobi to the camp?
No, you don’t – Governors’ Camp has it all covered. You’ll fly in from Nairobi to the Musiara Airstrip, and then they’ll have a vehicle waiting to take you the short distance to your tent.
How do their guests rate Governors’ Camp?
The camp’s got a really high level of customer satisfaction, which is probably down to the top-notch guiding, the thrill of the unfenced experience, and, of course, the unbeatable game viewing that comes with being in such a prime location.
What is the baggage weight limit for this flight?
All internal flights require you to pack your luggage in soft-sided bags, and each bag must weigh 15 kg (33 lbs) or less per person, including any hand luggage you’re bringing.
