Demerits of Luxury, Mid-Range, and Budget Masai Mara Lodges/Camps
Every accommodation in the Masai Mara has its unique benefits and drawbacks. When it comes to budget hotels, their main shortcoming is limited amenities, such as shared bathrooms or toilets. Their location is also often far from the reserve, leading to wasted time driving back and forth between the accommodation and the reserve. Meals are also an issue in such places, with limited food variety. We don’t recommend these facilities to Indian travellers, as they may lack Jain or vegetarian options.
When it comes to mid-range accommodation, you get a mix of comfort and cost, and we highly recommend these to all travellers. Their main problem is overcrowding due to many people who find them to meet their needs and stay within their budget. Another issue is the lack of options for bush activities, which is common in luxury accommodations. Most don’t offer walking safaris as they are located inside the central reserve.
The last option is the luxury accommodations. Their main con is the exorbitant cost, which most people cannot afford. However, this cost includes additional inclusions such as transfers, gourmet meals, laundry, private guides, and more. Another issue you may find here is the additional conservancy fees, which can increase the total safari cost for someone interested in game drives in the central reserve but staying in conservancies where they are located.

Tips for Choosing the Right Accommodation – What People Say from Experience
I went through hundreds of reviews online to see what other travellers say about booking the best Masai Mara camps and lodges, and have compiled some of their reviews. It’s important to note that these tips have mainly come from budget-conscious travellers.
First, many people prefer to book early, especially during the peak season from June to October. Although prices might not change, some people have reported having to stay in the “worst” room at the camp or lodge when booking at the last minute. At AjKenyaSafaris.com, we recommend booking your stay at least 6 months before your travel date to secure the ideal room —either with a river view or a savannah view.
Other people have recommended that travellers be flexible in the location and dates. For instance, one client noted that they saved USD 200 per day by switching from staying inside the reserve to staying just outside. The reason is that they were not required to pay the mandatory Masai Mara entry fee when not going on game drives.
The other point is that people recommended having an open mind when choosing the place to stay. Some people request lodges because of their structure, missing out on the luxury feel of the tented camp. Some of the best accommodations in the Masai Mara are tented camps, offering an authentic yet luxurious safari experience.
