Your 7 Days Kenya Safari Highlights: Quick Safari Overview

This 7-day Kenya safari itinerary is the ultimate way to experience Kenya’s wildlife trinity: the endless plains of the Masai Mara, the pink spectacle of Lake Nakuru and the elephant kingdom of Amboseli. It’s the African adventure of a lifetime in one week!

My Top Tip: Time your trip between July and October! This is the best time to visit Kenya from India, as you’ll get to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara.

Go beyond just watching! Add a hot air balloon ride for USD 500 per person, feel the earth beneath your feet on a walking safari, or enjoy the serenity of a boat tour on Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island for USD 50 per person. These extras make a fantastic trip legendary.

7-Day Kenya Safari Itinerary: My Recommended Route

When travelling for the first time, you should always aim to see the best of Kenya, and there is no better place to visit than the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru or Lake Naivasha, and Amboseli National Park. You can even combine all four destinations to have the ultimate experience.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Arrival
Smooth Arrivals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport: Gateway to Kenya’s Adventures!

Day 1: Pickup from JKIA, Transfer to Hotel, & Evening Rest

When you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, the capital city, we will be there to meet you. For my guests flying direct flights from India to Nairobi, a smooth transfer to your hotel is the priority. (Just remember to handle your Kenya visa for Indian citizens online before you travel!) Most flights from India arrived in the evening; hence, there are no activities planned for today. Spend overnight at Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport Hotel on a bed & breakfast basis.

Early Arrival at Additional Cost

We head straight to the Nairobi National Park. It’s unbelievable – you’re on a game drive watching lions and rhinos, and the city skyscrapers are right behind you! It’s the perfect, gentle introduction to your Kenyan wildlife viewing. Other options included Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Nairobi City Tour, and others.

Day 2: Nairobi to Masai Mara, Great Rift Valley, and Afternoon Game Drives

Today, the authentic safari begins! We leave Nairobi and head to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. You can choose a 5-6 hour drive, which is a great way to see the Rift Valley, or we can arrange a short domestic flight, which will reduce the travel time from Nairobi to the Masai Mara.

Once we settle you into your tented camp or luxury lodge, we’re out for your first afternoon game drive! The Mara is famous for its wildlife density. Keep your eyes sharp, we’re looking for the Big Five. This is the reason everyone talks about the Kenya Itinerary. Overnight and all meals at Mara Maisha Camp.

Day 3: Full Day in the Masai Mara with Picnic Lunches

Get up early for a morning game drive; this is when the predators are most active. We spend the whole day in the Masai Mara National Reserve. We’ll search for cheetahs on the open savannah and spend time tracking the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino).

If your trip is between July and October, we’ll focus on the Mara River crossings—the main event of the Great Wildebeest Migration. It’s madness, it’s beautiful, and it’s a moment that will make your wildlife photography collection. Overnight and all meals at Mara Maisha Camp.

Day 4: Maasai Cultural Tour, Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru, & Afternoon Game Drive

After one last breakfast in the Mara, we’ll drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. However, we have one more activity today, a tour of the Maasai village. Interact with the local community here, dance with the Maasai warriors, buy some Shuka, and more.  Then we drive to Lake Nakuru National Park.

The drive is fantastic and offers a great view of the Great Rift Valley. While we’re on the move, it’s worth mentioning Mount Kenya National Park, which is a must for those interested in mountain climbing and unique high altitude flora and fauna.

Lake Nakuru National Park is a gem. The alkaline waters attract flamingos, turning the shoreline pink! More importantly, it’s a sanctuary for the endangered black and white rhinos. A game drive here is almost guaranteed to see this elusive member of the Big Five. Overnight and all meals at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Amboseli National Park – Afternoon Game Drive

Today is a long drive, but the reward is worth it: Amboseli National Park. This is the classic African picture—massive dusty plains and huge herds of elephants framed by the stunning snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli National Reserve is a must for any Kenya wildlife safari. Once we arrive and you’ve checked into your accommodation, we’ll head out for an afternoon game drive. The swamp areas fed by Kilimanjaro’s runoff attract hundreds of elephants; it’s the perfect start to your time here. Overnight and all meals at Kibo Safari Camp.

Day 6: Full Day in Amboseli with Kilimanjaro Views

I always tell my guests: Rise early in the Amboseli Game Reserve! The sight of the sun rising over Mount Kilimanjaro with a herd of elephants in the foreground is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful images you will ever take. This is a must-do for any serious wildlife photographer.

We will spend the day in the park’s open plains and marshlands. Besides the elephants, Amboseli is also great for spotting lions, giraffes, zebras, and a vast variety of birdlife. It’s an easy-going, visually stunning destination perfect for a Kenyan family holiday. Overnight and all meals at Kibo Safari Camp.

Day 7: Farewell, Amboseli, and back to Nairobi

We start the last day with one more early morning game drive in Amboseli National Park to catch any previous sightings you may have missed. Then it’s time to head back to Nairobi, to reflect on all the wildlife and landscapes you’ve seen over the past week.

Once in Nairobi, depending on your flight schedule, we can arrange an optional city highlight—perhaps a visit to a craft market or the Giraffe Centre—before we transfer you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight home. Hope you had a great time!

Beyond the Itinerary: Kenya’s Other Great Places

Kenya is the heart of wildlife. While our 7-day Kenya itinerary covers the main attractions, the country is home to numerous other national reserves and parks, each with its own unique flavour of safari.

Besides the popular parks, I always recommend visiting places like Hell’s Gate National Park, where you can cycle or rock climb with the wildlife—a unique experience. Central Island National Park, a volcanic island in Lake Turkana, boasts exceptional biodiversity, offers boat rides, and is home to massive crocodiles.

Masai Mara National Reserve: The Legend

The Masai Mara National Park is legendary. It’s the stage for the annual Wildebeest Migration between July and October, where over a million wildebeests cross the Mara River. Trust me, you have to see this!

Year-round, it offers excellent game viewing and the best chance to see the Big Five. You can add a cultural visit to a Maasai Village or a hot air balloon safari to your trip.

Lake Nakuru National Park: The Pink

Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for two things: the pink flocks of flamingos and its status as a sanctuary for black and white rhinos. It’s also home to lions, waterbuck and various bird species, making it an excellent stop for both birdwatching and wildlife viewing in the Rift Valley.

Amboseli National Park: Land of Giants

Amboseli National Park is famous for its vast elephant herds and the unbeatable backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park’s diverse habitats support a variety of animals, including lions, cheetahs, and plains game. It’s a peaceful and beautiful place, and a must-visit on any Kenya wildlife safari.

Other Great Parks for Longer Stays

If you have more than 7 days, I recommend you check out other hidden gems:

Tsavo West & Tsavo East: Together, these form Kenya’s largest park. Tsavo West National Park is a dramatic and volcanic region, home to the Mzima Springs. Tsavo East National Park features the Yatta Plateau and the famous red elephants, making it ideal for classic game drives.

Aberdare National Park: A cool, misty park in the central highlands known for its forests, waterfalls and elusive animals like the rare bongo antelope.

Samburu National Reserve, located in the arid north, offers a unique blend of wildlife, including Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe, making it an ideal destination for a walking safari.

Unique Experiences in the Kenyan Bush

While our 7-day Kenya safari focuses on the main parks, you can add these to your journey. I often include these when talking about Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli safari costs for Indian tourists.

Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Masai Mara

This is the ultimate splurge and is worth every penny. Imagine taking off before sunrise in a hot air balloon, floating silently over the safari as the animals wake up below. You’ll enjoy excellent wildlife photography opportunities, culminating in a champagne breakfast in the bush!

Walking Safari

If you want to feel genuinely connected to the wild, try a walking safari in places like Samburu National Reserve. You leave the vehicle and walk with an armed ranger. It changes your entire perspective, you move from the Big Five to the tracks, the scents and the smaller animals you usually miss.

Boat Safari on Lake Naivasha

For a relaxing break, a boat safari on Lake Naivasha is perfect. This freshwater lake is home to huge hippos, massive crocodiles and hundreds of bird species.

It’s often combined with a walk on Crescent Island, where you can walk among giraffes, zebras and other grazers without any predators – a very special experience.

Timing is Everything: Best Time to Go

When is the best time to visit Kenya? The right time depends on your priorities: The Great Migration or a better price?

July to October: Peak Season for the Migration

If the Great Wildebeest Migration is your goal, consider visiting from July to October. The weather is dry, wildlife is easy to see, and the Masai Mara is buzzing. Expect higher prices for safari lodges during this peak season, but it’s worth it.

January to March: Dry, Hot and Great for Wildlife

This is my favourite time outside of the migration season. It’s dry and hot, and the ground is parched, so animals congregate around the few water sources, making them easy to see. The clear weather is also perfect for taking in the views of Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli. You’ll find fewer crowds and slightly lower prices than in the peak migration months.

April to June: The Green Season (Best Value)

This is the long rainy season. You might experience afternoon showers, but the Kenya safari package price is often lower, making it the best option for a Kenya budget safari package for Indians. The landscape is green, and it’s an excellent time for birdwatching and seeing newborn animals.

My Kenya Safari Essentials

Here, I have provided a list of things to have when travelling to Kenya.

Choosing the Right Package

First, define your budget. Do you prefer a luxury lodge or a more adventurous tented camp? The final 7-day Kenya safari cost from India depends on this. Always book with a reliable operator who can guarantee a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser and who is transparent about what the price includes, especially park fees. Don’t hesitate to ask about options for Indian food/cuisine on safari!

What to Pack

Pack light, comfortable clothes in neutral colours (khakis, browns). I recommend layers, as mornings and evenings are cool. Essentials? A hat, sunglasses, good walking shoes, and definitely a pair of binoculars! Your camera (with a zoom lens) and plenty of storage are a must for all that wildlife photography. Don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent!

Health and Safety Checklist

Consult your doctor well in advance of travel to discuss vaccinations and malaria tablets. Travel insurance is non-negotiable—it covers you for any unforeseen medical emergencies. I can assure you that Kenya is safe for Indians, especially in tourist areas. However, always be aware of your surroundings and listen to your guide’s advice.

10 Kenya Safari FAQs for Indians

We have addressed some of the frequently asked questions about the 7-day Kenya safari from India. Read on to find more.

1. Do Indians need a Visa (or eTA) to visit Kenya, and how to apply?

  • Answer: Yes. As of early 2024, all foreign nationals, including Indian citizens, are required to apply for a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before departure. On arrival, the facility has been discontinued. Apply online on the official government website.

2. What is the cost of a 7-day Kenya safari (including Masai Mara) from India?

  • Answer: The cost varies based on accommodation (budget, mid-range, or luxury) and inclusions (flights, activities). On average, a 6-7 day mid-range safari package (excluding international flights from India) can cost around ₹35,000 to ₹1,00,000+ per person per day (USD \$420 – \$1,200+) for the land package, depending on the season and luxury level. Luxury options can be much higher.

3. When is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari, especially to see the Great Migration?

  • Answer: The Great Migration (Wildebeest crossing the Mara River) is best seen in the Masai Mara from July to October. The overall “dry season” from June to October is the peak season for wildlife viewing.

4. Are there direct flights available from major Indian cities (Mumbai or Delhi) to Nairobi (NBO)?

  • Answer: Yes, Kenya Airways and IndiGo (from Mumbai) often have direct non-stop flights to Nairobi (Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – JKIA). Flights from Delhi often have a layover.

5. Is it safe for Indian families and female tourists to travel to Kenya for a safari?

  • Answer: Tourist areas, including National Parks and safari camps, are very safe with professional security measures. As in any major city globally, exercise high degree of caution in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa, especially after dark and in crowded areas to avoid petty crime.

6. Is vegetarian/Jain food available in safari lodges and camps?

  • Answer: Yes, most mid-range and luxury safari lodges and camps are experienced in catering to Indian guests and can provide delicious vegetarian meals. Inform your tour operator about your specific dietary requirements (e.g., Jain, vegan, or nut allergies) well in advance.

7. Do I need a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate?

  • Answer: Yes, India is on the list of countries requiring a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate for entry into Kenya. Carry the original certificate (or the ‘Yellow Card’) issued at an authorised centre, which must be valid for at least 10 days before arrival.

8. What currency should I carry, and are credit cards accepted?

  • Answer: The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), but US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted for most tourist expenses, including park fees (often paid in USD), activity costs, and tips. Major credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted at most lodges, city hotels, and large shops, but cash is required for small purchases and at markets.

9. What should I pack for a Kenya safari?

  • Answer: Pack lightweight, breathable and neutral colored clothing (khaki, brown, green) to blend in and deter insects. Layering is key: mornings and evenings can be cool, while days are hot. Include a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, a light jacket/fleece and a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

10. What are the other activities besides game drives, and what is the cost of a Hot Air Balloon Safari?

  • Answer: Other activities include:
    • Maasai Village Visit (Cultural Experience).
    • Walking Safaris (in private conservancies).
    • Hot Air Balloon Safari over the Masai Mara is a popular and expensive add-on, costing around USD \$500 – \$600 per person.
