Serengeti Mara Safari Region in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania

For exceptional wildlife viewing, this segment of the northern Serengeti National Park, particularly the Serengeti Mara safari area, rivals the renowned southern Serengeti plains. The Serengeti Mara is a compact area of rolling grasslands nestled between the Kenya border and the Mara River. Access to Serengeti Mara is near the Kogatende Rangers Post, requiring a crossing over a concrete causeway that spans the Mara River.

Discover Serengeti Mara

This extension of the globally acclaimed Masai Mara National Reserve hosts a remarkable population of lions and cheetahs. Additionally, elephants, topi, zebras, buffalo, and wildebeest are present year-round. The highlight is a small, rare population of black rhinos.

Mara River Crossings

During the annual Great Migration (July–September), wildlife viewing along the Mara River’s course is truly awe-inspiring. Picture vast herds braving the river, with crocodiles lurking. Serengeti Mara is the prime spot in the national park to witness these dry season wildebeest crossings. To elevate your Serengeti safari, consider a balloon safari, which operates during this season. As the Great Migration unfolds, massive herds of wildebeest and their companions gather on one side of the Mara River. It might take some time (even several days) for one courageous animal to cross, prompting the rest to follow. Interestingly, these herds sometimes cross the rivers back and forth without any clear reason.

In the 1970s, many safari adventurers accessed the Serengeti Mara area from Kenya, making it quite bustling. However, the closure of the Serengeti – Masai Mara border to non-residents in the ’70s led to a decrease in visitors, as the area became less accessible and off the main tourist paths. Rediscovered in the 2000s, it now offers premier Great Migration viewing and a serene, picturesque retreat during other months. Most camps are situated near Kogatende, south of the Mara River. Serengeti Mara is among the most thrilling and charming sections of the national park.

Serengeti Mara Safari Lodges

During the Great Migration season, Serengeti Mara is notably less crowded and provides superior wildlife viewing compared to the Masai Mara National Reserve across the border. A select few high-quality camps, including some mobile camps, are located here during migration only. As the migration herds move south, most camps are dismantled, leaving only a few permanent lodges in the area. We recommend seizing this opportunity to experience Serengeti National Park at its finest.
