Grumeti Game Reserve in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania
Nestled adjacent to Serengeti National Park, the Grumeti Game Reserve plays a pivotal role in the expansive Serengeti ecosystem. The Grumeti Game Reserve is an integral part of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, which is renowned for the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and other herbivores. Established by the Tanzanian government in 1994, the reserve was designed to safeguard the path of the annual wildebeest migration. In 2002, stewardship of the 350,000-acre expanse was entrusted to the Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fund, now known as the Grumeti Fund, to enhance conservation efforts within this segment of the Serengeti.

About Grumeti National Reserve
Located in the remote western reaches of the Serengeti, Grumeti is home to just a handful of lodges, ensuring that safari vehicles are a rare sight. This hidden gem of Serengeti National Park offers guests an unparalleled game viewing experience, thanks to its remote and stunning location. With visitor numbers capped at around sixty guests across a few exclusive Serengeti luxury camps, Grumeti promises a serene and private Serengeti experience, free from the usual tourist throngs.
Grumeti is renowned for its impressive large lion prides, which can number between 20 and 60 members. The chances of encountering lions here are exceptional, often allowing for solitary sightings.
Walking safaris & night drives
A select few locations in Serengeti National Park offer the unique experience of walking safaris, making Grumeti Game Reserve particularly special. Spend hours traversing the bush on foot with an expert guide, discovering the secrets of birds, insects, and animal tracks, as well as the cultural and medicinal uses of native plants. Being situated outside the boundaries of Serengeti National Park, grumeti area affords guides greater flexibility to conduct a diverse array of safari activities. Safari vehicles can operate both day and night, with the added thrill of off-road driving to maximize special wildlife encounters.
Game viewing remains excellent year-round. The diverse savannah south of the Grumeti River hosts resident giraffes, elephants, wildebeests, zebras, and lions. Meanwhile, the open grasslands north of the Grumeti River, less frequented by visitors, offer prime conditions for spotting cheetahs.
The riverine forests along the Grumeti River are home to striking black-and-white colobus monkeys, as well as a wealth of hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife. Lesser-known but equally dramatic as the Mara River crossing, the Grumeti River crossing occurs in late June or early July, marking a spectacular chapter in the annual Great Migration and providing a feast for the area’s giant crocodiles.
Accommodation in Grumeti Game Reserve
Only a select number of premium lodges are situated within the western Serengeti area of the Grumeti Game Reserve. However, during the Great Migration, from May to July, several mobile camps set up temporary bases to accommodate the influx of wildlife enthusiasts.
