The Story Behind Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Ol Kinyei Conservancy is the first of its kind within the Great Masai Mara Ecosystem, formed through a unique partnership between 171 Masai landowners and a safari operator. This collaboration has created a haven where wildlife roams freely without the need to navigate fences or other human-made barriers separating different Masai properties.

With no cattle allowed within the conservancy, the land has been given the opportunity to heal and regenerate after years of overgrazing. The conservancy’s commitment to conservation has helped support a thriving population of animals, including gazelles, buffaloes, leopards, lions, and, with some luck, even the rare wild dog.

The Great Migration at Ol Kinyei

One of the standout events at Ol Kinyei is the arrival of the Great Migration. Between June and October, thousands of gazelles, zebras, and wildebeests travel through the conservancy. In January, a lesser-known event, the Loita Hills Migration, sees between 100,000 to 250,000 animals pass through on their way to the Naboisho and Olare Motorogi Conservancies, and later return to the Loita Hills.

The exact timing of the migration varies yearly, but if your visit coincides with it, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. If you come in February or March, you might witness the annual wildebeest calving season.

Where to Stay in Ol Kinyei

One of the most appealing features of Ol Kinyei Conservancy is its low tourist density. Unlike other parts of the Masai Mara, there are only two safari camps within the conservancy, offering a more intimate and exclusive experience. These camps provide luxurious accommodations, complete with modern amenities.

Both camps are eco-conscious and follow sustainable practices, with one earning a gold eco-rating from Ecotourism Kenya. Each camp can accommodate a maximum of twelve guests, ensuring a personal and tranquil experience. You’ll also enjoy a variety of safari activities led by expert Masai guides and trackers, who are deeply familiar with the land and its wildlife.

Things to Do in Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Ol Kinyei is not just about the land and wildlife; it’s about immersing yourself in the local culture and connecting with the region’s rich history. The Masai guides, who have lived in the area for generations, are experts in tracking and wildlife observation.

Whether you’re on a thrilling 4×4 game drive or a serene nature walk, they’ll take you to the best spots for spotting animals like leopards, hippos, buffaloes, and impalas. Along the way, you’ll also get a firsthand look at their tracking techniques and learn about the land they’ve called home for centuries.

There are many activities to enhance your safari experience, such as:

  • Bush breakfast – Enjoy a delicious breakfast out in the savannah during a morning game drive.

  • Game drive with bush picnic – Take a break in the wild with a scenic picnic during your game drive.

  • Night safari – Experience the wilderness in a completely different way as you embark on a thrilling nighttime adventure.

  • Hot air balloon ride – Soar high above the savannah for a breathtaking aerial view of the landscape.

For a truly authentic experience, consider visiting a local Masai Manyatta (village) to immerse yourself in the culture, learning about their traditions and way of life that have been passed down through generations. You’ll also have the opportunity to partake in a sundowner, a quintessential safari activity where you can sip your favorite drink while watching the stunning African sunset.

Each of these activities is designed to create lasting memories and make your visit to Ol Kinyei a truly special experience.
