Overview of Mara Plains Camp

Abundant Wildlife, Minimal Crowds

Nestled in the heart of big cat territory, the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy borders the northern edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Known for its abundant wildlife and limited safari camps, only five safari camps now operate within its boundaries, including the intimate Mara Plains Camp. Tucked away among the verdant forested banks of the Ntiakitiak River, this exclusive camp offers an unparalleled blend of luxury and wilderness. Mara Plains Camp is also eco-friendly, highlighting its commitment to environmental efforts.

Choosing to stay within the Masai Mara conservancies brings numerous advantages, benefiting not only the safari traveler but also the local Maasai community, the land, and the wildlife. Each safari guest’s arrival, limited to a select few at any time, supports initiatives that benefit the Maasai people, conserve the area, and provide employment for Maasai staff, guides, and trackers. By staying at Mara Plains Camp, you contribute to improving the lives of the Maasai, who have called this land home for generations, and to the conservation of the landscape and its wildlife. This approach to sustainable tourism ensures that the natural environment and local culture are preserved for future generations. Mara Plains Camp is part of Great Plains Conservation, an initiative committed to protecting endangered species and supporting Kenyan projects like the Maasai Olympics. The program also invests in conservation education through kids’ camps and supports local female-owned businesses by showcasing their crafts in the the plains camp’s boutique. In a bid to restore the ecosystem, over 2000 trees have been planted in the Masai Mara, reviving indigenous flora in the Mara landscape.

As you approach the camp, the first safari tents emerge from the thick forest along the Ntiakitiak Riverbend. After crossing a bridge and ascending a few broad steps, you’ll be greeted by an endless horizon dotted with flat-topped acacias. The camp’s design and décor pay tribute to Eastern Africa’s heritage, with Swahili influences evident in the large wooden doors sourced from Lamu Island. The occasional red accents in the décor evoke the spirit of the great Maasai chiefs and warriors. The rich leathers, brass, and copper in the campaign-style furnishings create an opulent yet cozy ambiance. During your stay, you’ll savor delectable home-cooked meals, fine wines, and delightful cocktails. The camp comprises seven safari tents, accommodating a maximum of fourteen guests.

Each of the seven traditional safari-style tents is elevated on decks and features marquis ceilings. With muted tones that blend seamlessly into the landscape, each tent offers panoramic views of the distant savanna. The tents are equipped with a comfortable king-sized bed or twin beds, a seating area, rough-hewn wood floors, thick Lamu wood doors, en-suite bathrooms with luxurious deep copper freestanding tubs and walk-in showers, a writing desk, safe, and complimentary WiFi. Guests will also find a pair of Swarovski HD binoculars and a professional Canon camera body and lens kit for complimentary use. Families with children aged 6 and older are welcome in the designated family suite, which includes two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and the other with twin beds. The family suites feature a shared lounge area and a private verandah overlooking the savannah.
