Overview of Mara Plains Camp

Abundant Wildlife, Minimal Crowds

Nestled deep within big cat territory, the exclusive Olare Motorogi Conservancy offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve, it boasts an abundance of wildlife and a unique privilege – only five safari camps are allowed to operate within its boundaries.

One such gem is Mara Plains Camp, a small, intimate retreat tucked away on the lush banks of the Ntiakitiak River. This luxurious camp provides a perfect balance of comfort and nature, allowing you to immerse yourself in the wild while enjoying the finest amenities.

By choosing to stay in one of the Masai Mara conservancies, you’re not just indulging in a safari adventure; you’re also contributing to the well-being of the local Maasai community and the protection of the land and its wildlife. With limited guests at any time, your visit supports vital programs that benefit the Maasai people, as well as wildlife conservation efforts.

As a guest at Mara Plains Camp, you play an active role in improving the lives of the Maasai who have called this land home for generations, all while preserving the surrounding ecosystems. The camp is part of Great Plains Conservation, a program dedicated to protecting endangered species and supporting local initiatives, including the Maasai Olympics.

The camp also promotes education through conservation camps for children and supports women-owned businesses by selling their handcrafted goods in the camp’s boutique. Additionally, the conservation program has planted over 2,000 trees in the Masai Mara, helping regenerate the landscape and restore indigenous tree species.

Approaching the camp, you’ll be greeted by the sight of safari tents nestled among the dense forest along the Ntiakitiak River. Cross a bridge, ascend a few broad steps, and you’ll be treated to expansive views of the endless savanna, dotted with iconic flat-topped acacia trees.

The design of the camp is a beautiful tribute to Eastern Africa’s heritage, with large wooden doors sourced from the island of Lamu and occasional pops of red in the décor, evoking the powerful spirit of the Maasai chiefs and warriors. The campaign-style furnishings, made of rich leather, brass, and copper, create an atmosphere that’s both opulent and welcoming, ensuring you feel right at home in the heart of the wilderness.

Throughout your stay, you’ll enjoy home-cooked meals, excellent wines, and refreshing cocktails. The camp accommodates a maximum of 14 guests across its seven luxurious tents, offering an intimate and peaceful retreat.

Each of the seven safari tents is elevated on a wooden deck, blending harmoniously into the landscape. The muted tones of the tents provide a seamless connection to the surrounding environment, and from your private space, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the vast savanna. Inside, you’ll find a king-sized bed or twin beds, a cozy sitting area, rustic wooden floors, and distinctive Lamu wood doors.

The en-suite bathroom features a deep copper freestanding tub and a walk-in shower, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. For your convenience, a writing desk, safe, and complimentary WiFi are provided. Additionally, each tent is equipped with Swarovski HD binoculars and a Canon camera body with a professional lens kit, available for your use during your stay.

Families are also welcome, with children 6 years and older invited to enjoy the designated family suite. These spacious suites feature two bedrooms – one with a king-sized bed and the other with twin beds – along with a shared lounge area and a private verandah that overlooks the breathtaking savanna.

At Mara Plains Camp, you’ll experience more than just a safari – you’ll be a part of something larger, contributing to the preservation of the land, the wildlife, and the Maasai way of life.

All the photos you can take with their amazing camera equipment which no other camp offers. My favourite camp in the Mara, I've now stayed in 4 more camps and I would always go back to this one!"
