Overview of Mahali Mzuri Masai Mara

Gourmet Delights, Breathtaking Safaris, and Luxurious Comforts

The name of this safari camp says it all—Mahali Mzuri, which translates from Swahili as ‘beautiful place.’ And truly, the name couldn’t be more fitting. Set against the northern edge of Kenya’s renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, this exclusive camp is one of just five allowed to operate within the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy. The conservancy teems with an incredible range of wildlife, from elephants and wildebeests to lions, zebras, and leopards.

The area is alive with animals, and the camp’s skilled Maasai guides and trackers are experts at locating even the most elusive creatures. With breathtaking scenery all around, you’ll find yourself immersed in the very essence of the ‘Out of Africa’ experience as you enjoy your stay. What’s more, you won’t have to travel far to start your adventure—wildlife sightings begin right at the camp’s doorstep.

There’s no shortage of animals to observe in this vibrant environment. You might even witness a dramatic turf battle between competing lion prides vying for control of the area. In fact, the conservancy is home to roughly 150,000 wildebeest who are content to stay put rather than join the Great Migration, which takes place every year.

The Great Migration, involving over a million wildebeest alongside thousands of zebras, gazelles, and other herbivores, passes through Tanzania and Kenya on a 1,600-kilometer journey. During this period, predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas are drawn to the region, providing ample opportunities for wildlife sightings. The migration usually reaches the conservancy from July to September and departs by November, returning to the Serengeti.

Mahali Mzuri offers an extraordinary level of luxury and comfort, elevating your safari experience to a new level. The camp is home to twelve lavish safari tents and a spacious main tent that serves as the heart of the camp. This central tent is the perfect place to relax, with its cozy lounge area, open fireplace, library, iPads for guest use, iPod docking station, speaker system, games console, and television.

Complimentary binoculars are available, although you may prefer to bring your own. The main tent features a large deck where meals are served—breakfast and lunch at a communal table that accommodates up to 24 guests. A standout feature is the camp’s stunning twelve-meter infinity pool, which can be heated if the temperatures dip. Another highlight is the Nasaro Spa, where you can unwind with a massage while enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding bush.

Each of the twelve safari tents at Mahali Mzuri is situated on a ridge above a river, offering jaw-dropping views. The décor of each tent evokes the spirit of safari nostalgia, with plush leather couches, dark-wood furniture, and vibrant accents. Six tents are located on each side of the main tent, with the farthest tent just a five-minute walk from the communal area. These tents can accommodate up to two adults, with options for a king-sized four-poster bed or two twin beds.

Additionally, two larger tents can host two extra guests aged 15 or younger, bringing the total capacity of the camp to 24 guests. Inside each tent, you’ll find all the modern comforts you need, including an en-suite bathroom, private deck, Bose iPod dock, Nespresso machine, free bottled water, minibar, and Africology bath products.

For families, Mahali Mzuri offers two family-sized tents, each equipped with a sofa bed for children. The camp tailors special meals and activities for young guests, such as beading lessons with local Maasai women or beginner archery classes. Children also receive a ‘bushbaby bag’ filled with fun items like coloring books, nature games, and a cap.

Families of four or more are provided with a private safari vehicle for game drives. The camp welcomes children ages eight and up, ensuring an unforgettable family safari experience.

Mahali Mzuri Culinary Journey Experience

From sunrise to sunset, the team at Mahli Mzuri works tirelessly to ensure your stay is unforgettable. The chefs prepare exquisite meals using locally sourced ingredients, and all meals and drinks, including fine champagne, are included in your stay. You have the freedom to help yourself to anything you like, whenever you wish. If you have any dietary requirements, simply let the camp know in advance, and they’ll cater to your needs. The menu is a fusion of local and international flavors, offering something special with every meal.

Expect freshly baked breads and pastries, bush BBQs, champagne picnics, and sundowners with delicious appetizers, along with your favorite drinks and cocktails. You can enjoy meals in the open bush, on your private deck, or in the shared dining tent. Breakfast is typically served as a continental buffet with a selection of à la carte hot dishes. If you’re heading out early for a game drive, grab a quick snack or request a packed breakfast to enjoy in a scenic spot in the bush.

Lunch is usually served on the main deck at individual tables, and you can choose from a delicious à la carte menu. If you prefer something light before dinner, indulge in an afternoon tea before your evening game drive. Dinner is typically served at a large communal table in the bush, though you can also opt for a more intimate setting for two. Occasionally, the camp offers Maasai dancers around a campfire for entertainment. After a full day of safari, be sure to try a Kenyan Dawa cocktail—made with vodka, lime juice, and honey. The name, meaning “medicine” in Swahili, is said to work wonders after a long day.

Tripadvisor Reviews for Mahali Mzuri

Great place to stay. Great location, great tents, fantastic food. Super friendly and dedicated staff. A varied program full of surprises, before-during and after the game drives. Great guide/driver Betty. Personal waiter, Johnstone, was super friendly. A stay to remember!

Review by Ann Marie B

The Mahali Mzuri is one of the nicest tented resort camps in Kenya. The staff is friendly and super-attentive. Our Butler, Kisseme, was on top of us whenever we were in camp and our guide, Kas, may literally be the best guide in all of Kenya. He was super-knowledgeable about not only the animals but also the flora as well as the ways of the indigenous Masai people. I'd strongly recommend the 5k hike we took through the savanna to visit a Masai village and local school - truly a highlight. Of course, you can't beat the wildlife so no need to embellish there! The phyisical spaces of the camp are amazing. The camp is set up on a cliff overlooking amazing views into a valley containing a stream. You could practically "safari" from the restaurant, bar or even back deck of your room. The rooms themselves were comfortable and airy with spectacular - and large - rear decks with unrivaled views. My only complaint was that they felt a little "tired" but I understand that they are renovating this camp in the coming months.
