Why the Masai Mara is on Every Traveller’s Bucket List

The raw beauty and concentrated wildlife action make a Masai Mara safari a must-do for any serious traveller.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

The annual Great Migration, where over 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle cross the plains in search of greener pastures, is the Mara’s peak season. I have seen it many times, and it never ceases to amaze me, especially the river crossings.

Year-Round Wildlife Density

Even if your travel dates don’t coincide with the migration, the Masai Mara National Reserve has an exceptional permanent wildlife population. You will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) and cheetah, giraffe, hippos and over 450 species of birds. This is exceptional game viewing, whatever time of the year you visit Kenya.

Your Masai Mara Safari Options

When looking at Masai Mara packages, you’ll see that safaris are generally categorised by the mode of transport from Nairobi and the level of accommodation to suit every style and budget.

Road Safaris vs. Fly-in Safaris

Choosing how you travel from Nairobi determines the pace and cost of your safari.

Road Safari Packages: The Scenic & Budget-Friendly

The journey from Nairobi to the Mara takes about 5 to 6 hours by road. While a bit longer, this option reduces the overall Masai Mara safari cost and allows you to see the beautiful scenery of the Great Rift Valley with a mandatory stop at the viewpoint for those iconic pictures. Perfect for budget travellers and those who want to experience more of the journey.

Fly-in Safari Packages: Luxury and Time Efficiency

For those who want to prioritise time and comfort, a fly-in safari is the ultimate luxury. A scheduled flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi gets you into the reserve in about an hour. These packages are more expensive but offer seamless transfers to a camp airstrip, and you can start your game drive straight away—ideal for shorter trips or those who want to maximise their time in the reserve.

Customise Your Masai Mara Packages to Your Budget

I’ve helped thousands of clients plan their trips, and I know cost is a significant factor. The good news is that the Mara has options for every budget. Here’s a quick breakdown of the safari packages:

Budget Masai Mara Safari Packages

These Kenya safari deals utilise more basic permanent or mobile camps located just outside the reserve to minimise conservancy fees. They use safari vans for transport and offer group-joining options, allowing you to have a great, affordable experience without compromising on game viewing.

Mid-Range Safari Packages

Mid-range options are all about balance. You’ll find great tented camps or lodges both inside the central reserve and in the conservancies. En-suite, comfortable and immersed in the bush. 4×4 Land Cruiser transport.

Luxury Masai Mara Tour Packages

For the ultimate indulgence, luxury packages include staying at exclusive high-end tented camps or lodges. Gourmet dining, private guiding, luxurious amenities, and optional activities like hot air balloon rides and bush breakfasts. Fly-in transfer and game drives in private 4×4 vehicles.

Must-Have Activities in Your Itinerary

A safari is more than just game drives; it’s about connecting with the local environment and culture. When booking your Masai Mara package, please add these details.

The Hot Air Balloon Safari

Imagine floating silently over the plains at dawn as the sun rises, spotting animals from above. This is the ultimate experience. I always recommend this as an option – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Masai Village Visit

A visit to a local Maasai village is a must-do. Here you will get first-hand experience of their ancient culture, traditions and way of life. The dances and the red shukas of the warriors are a sight to behold and add to your trip.

Private Day and Night Game Drives

For mid-range and luxury Masai Mara packages, especially those in the private conservancies, you will have the option of night game drives and off-road driving, which can give you a chance to see nocturnal animals like the leopard or aardvark.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are the commonly asked questions we get from travellers about Masai Mara safari packages.

1. When is the best time to visit the Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara is good all year round, but the peak season and best time for most visitors is July to October. This dry season window is when:

  • The Great Wildebeest Migration is in the Mara, especially the Mara River crossings (August and September).
  • The sparse vegetation makes it easier to see wildlife.
  • The weather is sunny, dry and cool in the mornings/evenings.

Outside of this, the “Green Season” (November to March) is cheaper, greener, and the calving season (February) is when predators are attracted.

2. Are the Big Five guaranteed on a Masai Mara safari?

While wildlife sightings can never be 100% guaranteed as the animals are wild and free, the Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo). Lion, elephant and buffalo are almost guaranteed. Leopard sightings are common, but require patience, and the Black Rhino population, though protected, is the most elusive.

3. Do I need a Yellow Fever vaccine to enter Kenya?

The Yellow Fever vaccine is not required for visitors arriving directly from countries with no risk of Yellow Fever transmission (most of North America, Europe, Australia, etc.).

  • It is required if you are arriving from or have recently transited through a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (e.g. Uganda, Brazil, etc.).
  • Travel health clinics always recommend it for any prolonged travel in a country with Yellow Fever risk areas, including the Masai Mara, and you may be required to show the certificate for onward travel to other African countries. Always consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance.

4. How many days should I spend in the Masai Mara?

For a classic safari experience, we recommend a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights. This gives you time for morning and afternoon game drives. For a truly immersive, unhurried experience, especially if you want to see a river crossing during the migration, 4 days/3 nights is ideal. This maximises your chances of great sightings and allows for optional activities like a hot air balloon safari.

5. What’s the difference between the Masai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding Conservancies?

  • National Reserve: Managed by the county government, high wildlife density, off-road driving in some areas, but more crowded during peak migration season.
  • Conservancies (e.g. Olare Motorogi, Mara Naboisho): Privately leased land run in partnership with the local Maasai community. Lower tourist density, exclusive use for guests of specific camps, night game drives and walking safaris. Staying here means a more private, exclusive and tailored safari experience.
