Travelling to Masai Mara by Flight
Flying is a quick and efficient way to reach the Masai Mara, offering multiple options for both international and domestic travel.
International Air Travel
For international flights, your best point of entry is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. As East Africa’s largest aviation hub, NBO is well-connected to major cities worldwide, making it easy to find flights. Airlines like KLM, Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Kenya Airways, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, and Swiss are among the many that operate from global airports. You’ll also find regional flights available to and from neighboring countries and Southern African destinations.
Domestic Air Travel
To travel directly to the Masai Mara from Nairobi, Wilson Airport (WIL) is your best bet. The flight duration from WIL to the Mara is only 45 to 60 minutes, providing a comfortable and scenic journey. Many of the airstrips in the Mara area are accessible by small aircrafts, with airlines such as SafariLink and AirKenya offering regular services. Upon arrival, a safari vehicle will take you from the airstrip to your lodge, where you can start your wildlife adventure. Alternatively, flights from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Tanzania are also an option, as well as direct flights from Mombasa, Diani, Amboseli, and Samburu during the high season.

Drive-In Safaris to Masai Mara
Booking a guided drive-in safari from Nairobi is a popular option. This allows you to explore not just the Masai Mara, but other stunning locations in Kenya, such as Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru. If you’re interested in an extended safari, you can arrange an itinerary to visit multiple parks in Kenya.
Self-Drive Safaris to Masai Mara
While it’s possible to drive to the Masai Mara yourself, it’s not recommended. A 4×4 vehicle is essential due to the rough roads, and driving requires careful planning. We don’t assist with self-driving arrangements, but if you choose this option, make sure you’re well-prepared.

If you’re planning to visit Kenya for a safari, it’s essential to obtain an eVisa through the official eTA (electronic travel authorization) website. The eTA is mandatory for travelers from many countries and costs USD 34. It’s important to apply only through the official eTA website to ensure your application is processed correctly. The approval process typically takes about three days, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your trip. Once approved, you’ll be able to enter Kenya and enjoy your safari experience without any issues. The eTA is valid for only 90 days.
Traveling from the Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park (or vice versa)
Traveling between the Masai Mara and Serengeti National Park can be tricky due to the closure of the Bologonya border crossing. However, there are still flight options available.
Flight Option 1: Mara to Serengeti via Migori and Tarime
This route, operated by Safarilink and Coastal Aviation, requires a flight from the Masai Mara to Migori, followed by a road transfer to the border and another flight from Tarime to the Serengeti. This service operates mainly during high season and requires a minimum of two passengers.
Flight Option 2: Mara to Serengeti via Nairobi
The most hassle-free way to travel between the two parks is by flying back to Nairobi and then taking a flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Tanzania. This option avoids the complications of overland transfers and ensures a smooth connection to your next adventure. You can even opt to stay overnight in Nairobi to relax before heading to Tanzania.
