The Old Meets the New at Maasai Mara National Reserve
Nestled just a kilometre from the renowned Masai Mara, famously known as the world’s ‘seventh natural wonder,’ Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp offers a truly unique experience. The name of the camp speaks volumes, as it pays homage to the classic safari camps of a bygone era, where wealthy travelers would come to hunt and relax in the lap of luxury. These days, however, the only kind of hunting is the pursuit of the perfect wildlife photograph, and the elegance of the 1920s still resonates throughout the camp.
Set within the private Olderkesi Conservancy, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a rich array of wildlife, all while avoiding the crowds typical of larger tourist areas. The legendary Cottar family has been at the helm of this camp for over a century, spanning five generations, and their commitment to excellence is evident in the numerous awards the camp has garnered over the years.
Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp is renowned for its opulent marquee tents, exceptional Maasai guides and trackers, and perhaps some of the finest cuisine in the Mara. The attentive staff is dedicated to ensuring that your stay is nothing short of unforgettable. In fact, when gathered by the fireside, your guides and hosts are more than happy to share captivating stories about the history of the camp and the Cottar family, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
This small-scale luxury camp boasts just nine beautifully appointed cream-colored tents, providing an intimate and exclusive experience. With four double tents, three family suites, and two charming honeymoon suites, each tent comes complete with its own en-suite bathroom. Family suite tents also feature cozy living rooms with fireplaces, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. The tents are generously spaced to ensure your complete privacy, and are elegantly furnished with antique pieces, oriental rugs, four-poster beds, dressing rooms, porcelain, crystal, and outdoor verandas that overlook the expansive savannah and the picturesque Olderkesi Hills.
There are two stylish and spacious main tents where guests can gather for meals, drinks, and relaxation. The camp’s dining experience offers a chance to savor locally sourced dishes, many of which come from the camp’s very own organic garden. When you need a refreshing break, take a dip in the stunning 25-meter pool or unwind with a spa treatment after an exciting day in the wild. For a truly unique experience, the camp also offers an outdoor safari bath or shower in the heart of the savannah, adding an extra touch of adventure to your stay.

Tripadvisor Feedback of Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp
Amazing!!! The best! I am so happy we return after ten long years to this wonderful place. To meet the whole staff, our guide Douglas who guided us the last time and we were more than lucky to meet him again along with the great staff.
The safaris are so much fun, adventurous and you are almost alone on the savanna! The camp is exquisite with comfortable beds in this huge tents.
We travelled a whole family of seven and everybody would like to come back. A true ’bucketlist-journey’
And above all the food are also top notch! There was really sad to leave! But we dream of coming back one day!
So this is really recommended if you want to have the best time of your life!
Review by Ankan
We stayed for 6 nights early December 2024. Our first time to Cottars but our 22nd time for a Kenya Mara Safari. It was excellent, beautiful glamping tents, good food, excellent staff ( thank you Wilson and Salash in particular) and a really great Safari experience. We liked the forested and hilly part of the Mara, right on the border of Tanzania. Lots of lion sighting, buffalo, Elephant and many birds and antelopes. No leopard or Cheetah this time. Great evening experiences in the conservancy.
Our normal area is to the North, lots of big cats but lots of tourist vehicles too! We enjoyed the solitude.
This is a luxury family owned camp and the family commitment to the customer and their staff really shows, thank you team Cottars.
