Serengeti Balloon Safaris Locations

Balloon flights are scheduled daily at the hour of 06h00 from four launch sites within Serengeti National Park: one year-round near Seronera, and others in the Ndutu area (from 25 December to 15 March), the Western Corridor (from June to October), and northern Serengeti (from July to October). Each of these launch sites offers unique scenic landscapes, enhancing the overall experience of your balloon safari.

The Experience

Although not inexpensive, a balloon safari is worth every penny. Gliding gracefully over the treetops as you fly and the sun rises on the horizon offers an unforgettable perspective of the endless Serengeti plains. With early morning departures, you might catch nocturnal predators as they conclude their nightly activities.

During most flights, the licensed pilot will navigate at higher altitudes, providing uninterrupted panoramic views of the Serengeti, while other segments may involve low-level flying, offering opportunities to observe wildlife up close. Skilled pilots can trace rivers and streams, hovering just meters above grunting hippos or roaming giraffes. Flying low allows for incredible aerial wildlife photography. You’ll traverse the plains wherever the wind takes you, while the balloon pilot and crew tracks your journey from the ground in their vehicles.

Hot Air Ballooning & the Great Migration

To maximize your chances of witnessing the Great Migration, with its countless wildebeest and zebra, book a flight in the Ndutu area, where large herds gather between December and March. Other locations may also offer views of the Great Migration, but remember, the herds are mobile and may only remain in one area briefly, sometimes just for a few days. A bit of luck is required. Witnessing the Great Migration in person is truly a wildlife spectacle, with countless wildebeest and zebra moving across the plains.

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Flight Price

A Serengeti balloon flight costs US$ 599 per person (including the Tanapa ballooning fee of US$ 40). This rate covers transfer from your lodge or camp to the launch or landing site, the balloon flight, and a champagne breakfast after landing. The flight duration ranges from 50 to 70 minutes. Depending on the landing site, the breakfast location is set up daily at a different spot. You will share the balloon with up to 16 passengers in total. Despite the cost, the comprehensive package ensures a luxury experience from start to finish.

Planning a Balloon Safari

Prepare for an early start; transfers from the lodge in the Seronera area leave at 05h30, and from other lodges around 04h00. Remember to bring warm clothing and a bag to secure your camera, binoculars, and other personal items. We can arrange departures for a Serengeti balloon safari from most lodges and camps in the Serengeti. We strongly recommend booking a balloon safari in advance, as it is a highly popular activity that gets booked out early, especially during peak season.

What happens if the weather is poor?

Ballooning is dependent on favorable weather conditions. If your hot air balloon safari is canceled due to adverse weather, we will attempt to reschedule your flight for the weather at a later time. If rescheduling is not possible, a full refund will be provided. Our safety protocols ensure that your well-being is prioritized, and alternative arrangements are made if necessary.

Why is a balloon safari so expensive?

Balloon rides in the Serengeti come with a high operating cost, particularly in remote areas like Serengeti National Park. Hot air balloons must be meticulously maintained and are replaced after approximately 850 flight hours, with each balloon costing over US$ 100,000. Fuel expenses and crew salaries also contribute to the cost of balloon flights. Each flight requires a team of six crew members plus a licensed pilot, with an additional ten individuals working behind the scenes to ensure the balloon takes off smoothly. This includes recovery vehicles, transfer vehicles, and backup operations. Furthermore, a significant portion of the price goes towards conservation fees, supporting the preservation of the Serengeti National Park. The high cost reflects the exclusive adventure and the meticulous planning required to offer such a unique experience.
