Northern Serengeti, Lobo & Loliondo Safari Region in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania
The North Serengeti acts as a vital passageway for the Great Migration, linking the lush short-grass plains of the southern green season with the dry season regions further north. This area of Serengeti National Park is often overlooked and less frequented by visitors. Let’s change that perception.

About Northern Serengeti & Lobo
The northern Serengeti is pristine and offers a serene escape compared to the bustling southern Serengeti plains. This region extends from the Lobo Hills down to Seronera, characterized by its picturesque green rolling hills, a delightful contrast to the flatter southern plains. The denser vegetation makes wildlife viewing more challenging compared to the open plains south of Seronera. However, the quieter atmosphere in the northern Serengeti is a worthwhile trade-off, allowing you to embark on a game drive without encountering other vehicles. Imagine traversing this landscape of open grasslands interspersed with dense woodlands in complete solitude.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to explore the northern Serengeti and Lobo is during September and October, when the Great Wildebeest Migration moves south from the Serengeti Mara area back to the southeastern Serengeti Plains. Occasionally, large herds of wildebeest can also be seen in July, particularly in wetter years when the northward migration takes a more easterly path. While the timing of the migrating herds can be unpredictable, there is always abundant wildlife to observe in this part of the Serengeti. The region is home to a significant portion of the park’s elephant population, with the Lobo area being especially favorable for elephant sightings. The Lobo Hills are renowned for their large lion prides, and sightings of cheetah, leopard, spotted hyena, and the elusive serval are common, particularly in the open grasslands at dawn.
Loliondo Game Controlled Area
Loliondo Game Controlled Area (LGCA) is not part of Serengeti National Park but plays a crucial role in the Great Migration route within the Greater Serengeti ecosystem. Accessible via Klein’s Gate, 20 kilometers north of Lobo, Loliondo stretches over 4,000 kilometers along the northeastern boundary of Serengeti National Park and the northern edge of the Ngorongoro Crater Area. Inhabited by the Maasai, Loliondo serves as a buffer zone to the national park, where Maasai cattle graze alongside wildlife. Several safari lodges and camps are located within Loliondo, on concessions ranging from a few dozen to thousands of hectares. The most notable of these is Klein’s Camp, often regarded as one of the finest wildlife viewing destinations in Tanzania and Africa. Klein’s Camp operates as a private reserve, offering exceptional wildlife viewing, and since it lies outside the national park boundaries, it allows for night drives and bush walks.
