Northern Serengeti, Lobo & Loliondo Safari Region in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania
Serengeti North is a vital link in the path of the Great Migration, bridging the lush southern plains during the green season with the drier northern regions later in the year. It’s one of the least explored areas of Serengeti National Park, often flying under the radar. But it shouldn’t be—this hidden gem is well worth your attention.

Discovering Northern Serengeti & Lobo
If you’re seeking a more serene and untouched safari experience, the northern Serengeti and Lobo region might be your perfect escape. Unlike the busier southern plains, this area is quieter, more rugged, and wonderfully scenic. Stretching from the rolling Lobo Hills down toward Seronera, the landscape here features gentle hills and a mix of grassy expanses and wooded patches—offering a refreshing contrast to the flat, open plains in the south.
While the denser vegetation can make wildlife spotting more of a challenge, the lack of tourist crowds means you might find yourself on a game drive without another vehicle in sight. Imagine exploring wide, open grasslands dotted with acacia and fig trees in total peace—it’s a truly unique experience.
When to Go
The prime time to visit northern Serengeti and Lobo is between September and October, when the Great Migration passes through on its journey south from the Masai Mara to the southeastern Serengeti plains. Occasionally, herds can also be seen in July—especially in years with more rainfall, when they take a slightly different, easterly path.
That said, the exact timing of the migration is never guaranteed, so flexibility is key. Even outside the migration period, this region remains full of life. You’ll have a good chance of encountering elephants (particularly around Lobo, which hosts more elephants than anywhere else in the park), along with prides of lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, and bat-eared foxes. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a serval—an elegant, spotted wildcat often seen at dawn in the grassy clearings.
Exploring the Loliondo Game Controlled Area
Just north of Lobo, you’ll find the Loliondo Game Controlled Area (LGCA), which, while technically outside the Serengeti National Park, plays a crucial role in the migration route. Accessed through Klein’s Gate (about 20 km from Lobo), this area stretches along the northeastern border of Serengeti and up to the northern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The region is home to the Maasai, who live and graze their livestock here in harmony with the wildlife. Loliondo acts as a buffer zone for the park, blending cultural and natural heritage. It’s also home to several safari camps and lodges, varying in size and exclusivity.
Among these, Klein’s Camp stands out as a top-tier private concession. It’s often regarded as one of the best spots in Tanzania—and even Africa—for wildlife viewing. Because it lies outside national park boundaries, you’re allowed to go on night drives and guided walking safaris here, adding an extra dimension to your adventure.
Whether you’re chasing the Great Migration or just looking for a quieter, more immersive safari, northern Serengeti and Lobo offer something truly special.
