Serengeti Mara Safari Region in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania

When it comes to game viewing, there’s a section of the northern Serengeti that rivals the southern plains in terms of wildlife action. This area, known as Serengeti Mara, is a compact expanse of rolling grasslands nestled between the Kenya border and the Mara River. To get there, you’ll pass through the Kogatende Rangers Post and cross a concrete causeway that stretches over the Mara River.

Discover Serengeti Mara

Serengeti Mara, an extension of the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, is a haven for wildlife. Here, you’ll encounter not only the majestic lions and cheetahs but also large herds of elephants, as well as topi, zebra, buffalo, and wildebeest. One of the highlights of this region is the rare black rhino population, adding a touch of rarity to the experience. This incredible biodiversity makes Serengeti Mara a must-visit destination for any nature enthusiast.

Mara River Crossings: A Spectacle of Nature

From July to September, the Great Migration transforms Serengeti Mara into an unforgettable wildlife spectacle. The Mara River becomes the focal point for dramatic river crossings, as massive herds of wildebeest attempt to cross the waterway, often facing the threat of lurking crocodiles. This is one of the best spots to witness these crossings, which are a highlight of the dry season in the Serengeti. To make your adventure even more memorable, consider a balloon safari during this period, offering a unique perspective of the migration. During the Great Migration, wildebeest gather on one side of the Mara River, sometimes waiting for days before one daring individual crosses, prompting the rest to follow. Interestingly, these herds sometimes move back and forth across the river without any clear reason, adding an element of unpredictability to the scene.

The Serengeti Mara’s Rediscovery

Until the 1970s, travelers typically accessed the Serengeti Mara region from Kenya, making it a busier location. However, when the Serengeti-Masai Mara border closed to non-residents, the area saw a decline in visitors due to its reduced accessibility. In the 2000s, Serengeti Mara was rediscovered, offering prime viewing for the Great Migration. Outside this peak season, the area provides a serene and picturesque escape, with fewer crowds and stunning landscapes. The majority of camps are located near Kogatende, south of the Mara River, offering guests a peaceful retreat in one of the most captivating sections of the park.

Accommodation in Serengeti Mara

During the Great Migration, Serengeti Mara tends to be much quieter and offers a higher-quality wildlife experience compared to the Masai Mara National Reserve across the border. You’ll find a small selection of top-tier camps in the region, including some mobile camps that follow the migration route. Once the herds move south, these camps pack up, leaving only a few permanent lodges to remain. This period presents a fantastic opportunity to explore Serengeti National Park in its most pristine form, with fewer tourists and an abundance of wildlife.
