Western Corridor Safari Area in Serengeti National Park - Tanzania
The Western Corridor, also known as Serengeti West, extends for roughly 100 kilometers from the central Serengeti to the shores of Lake Victoria, following the path of the Grumeti River. The region is primarily characterized by the Grumeti and Mbalageti Rivers, which flow in parallel to one another in a westward direction, maintaining a distance of about 20 kilometers between them.

About the Western Corridor
The Grumeti and Mbalageti rivers play a vital role in the ecosystem of the Western Corridor, feeding substantial riverine forests before flowing into Lake Victoria. This area also features some smaller mountain ranges. The Western Corridor is a scenic and tranquil part of the park, supporting a wide range of wildlife year-round.
The region experiences its peak visitor activity during May-July, aligning with the Great Migration’s passage through this part of the Serengeti. While the Grumeti River crossing may not be as famous as the Mara River crossing, it offers just as much excitement, with the added benefit of fewer crowds. For the migrating herds, crossing the Grumeti River is one of the first major challenges they encounter on their journey north.
The Western Corridor’s terrain is flatter compared to the northern regions of the Serengeti, with a higher moisture content and more dense vegetation than the southern plains. The area is characterized by park-like woodlands interspersed with open grasslands and areas filled with the unique whistling thorn tree (Vachellia drepanolobium).
Wildlife Viewing in the Western Corridor
The Western Corridor offers year-round wildlife viewing, with consistent sightings throughout the year. To the south of the Grumeti River, the landscape consists of broken savannah, which is home to substantial populations of giraffes, wildebeests, elephants, zebras, and lions. North of the river, you’ll find more open grasslands, ideal for spotting cheetahs. During the Great Migration season (from June to October), you can even experience a balloon safari to witness the spectacle from above.
Accommodation in the Western Corridor
Tourism in the Western Corridor remains relatively low due to the limited number of lodges and camps in the area, and mobile safaris don’t usually extend this far from Seronera. However, during the Great Migration (May-July), this changes, as temporary mobile camps set up in the area to accommodate the influx of visitors.
