Overview of Richard's River Camp

Luxury Tented Camp in Private Mara North Conservancy

Nestled along the peaceful banks of the Ntiakatek River, Richard’s River Camp offers an incredibly private and serene retreat. This exclusive camp, located in the Mara North Conservancy, is one of only eleven safari camps in the area, ensuring an intimate and tranquil experience.

The surrounding landscape is simply breathtaking, with stunning views of Ngoyanai Springs, a permanent water source that draws an abundance of wildlife. You’ll often see animals grazing nearby, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a pride of lions that call this place home. After sunset, their roars echo through the evening, adding to the camp’s magical atmosphere.

With just seven tents—six standard and one family tent—this camp is ideal for individuals, families, or small groups of friends seeking a peaceful getaway. The income generated from your stay directly supports conservation efforts in the Masai Mara.

Staying in the Mara North Conservancy offers unique advantages over the main Masai Mara National Reserve, such as the opportunity to embark on exciting night game drives, guided bush walks, and visits to nearby Maasai villages. Plus, with fewer visitors allowed in the conservancy, you’ll enjoy a more peaceful, less crowded safari experience compared to the busy reserve during peak travel times.

Richard’s River Camp has a laid-back yet luxurious atmosphere, with décor chosen by owner Liz from her travels around the world. The camp’s design features light colors and airy materials, creating an open, clean, and sophisticated feel. Each tent is spacious, cozy, and inviting, offering the perfect escape after a day of adventure.

The family tent is especially roomy, making it ideal for a family safari. All tents feature outdoor showers with hot running water and excellent water pressure, ensuring comfort in the heart of the wild. Privacy is a priority, with each tent placed thoughtfully to give you space and seclusion.

The camp is fully solar-powered, minimizing its environmental impact, and it offers 24-hour security, battery charging facilities, free Wi-Fi, complimentary laundry services, and a library for your enjoyment. Families are welcome, though parents are advised to keep a close eye on young children due to the wildlife roaming freely in the area.

When it comes to dining, Richard’s River Camp offers a communal, family-style experience. The talented chefs cater to a wide range of tastes, preparing meals that will delight your senses. On most nights, you’ll dine under the stars at a beautifully set candlelit table, soaking in the surroundings.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the camp has an elegant mess tent where you can still enjoy stunning views while sitting at a large communal table. The tent also features a cozy lounge area, making it a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. There are also memorable bush dinners under the stars and breakfast buffets served on the plains.

Special dietary needs, such as gluten-free or vegetarian options, are easily accommodated, just let the camp know in advance. You’ll also find large, recyclable water containers in each tent to keep you hydrated throughout your stay.

Tripadvisor Feedback on Richard’s River Camp

"This is glamping at its best!! What an experience we had. We spent 4 nights at Richard’s River Camp and absolutely loved it. The tent lodging was fantastic. Rustic and charming. Bathroom was great with an outdoor shower.
Every morning started with coffee or tea brought to the tent and then we were off for safari jeep rides thru the Masai Mara National Reserve. Such a beautiful country with such an abundance of wildlife. Our driver/guide, Lenny and our spotter Kapute made this trip awsome. So knowledgeable and accommodating.
The breakfast and “ sun downers” on the Mara was just mesmerizing. The staff at Richard’s Camp was so helpful, friendly and fun and must mention that the food was just out of this world. Thank you Richard’s Camp for such an unforgettable time at this beautiful place."
The Masai Mara is located in the south of Kenya. The Camp is well out of the way but staffed with superlative guides (ask for Dennis!), very talented cooks and very comfortable accommodation. The owner and manager are available seemingly 24/7 to cater to almost any whim.
It would be difficult to produce a complete list of the animals and birds we saw – lion, leopard, hyena, baboons, elephant, endless wildebeest and gazelles, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and that’s just a starter. The guides are capable of bringing you to a viewing location just a few meters away in some cases.
Several times we were treated to ‘bush meals’ – delicious meals out in the wild, surrounded by game animals. Camera safaris just can’t get much better. Highly recommended."
