Porini Camps Masai Mara, Home for True Wildlife Enthusiast
Nestled deep within the Masai Mara ecosystem, the Ol Kinyei Conservancy offers a unique and tranquil escape, blending Maasai community-owned conservation with abundant wildlife. This haven is home to just two intimate safari camps: Porini Mara Camp and Porini Cheetah Camp. If you’re seeking a small, welcoming retreat, Porini Mara Camp is a perfect choice.
The area is teeming with wildlife, making it an attractive destination for safaris. Surrounded by diverse landscapes, you’ll find wide-open savannahs, patches of forest, natural springs, and flowing rivers. While the famous Masai Mara National Reserve is a short drive away for those wanting to explore, staying at the conservancy offers its own set of distinct advantages. You’ll have the opportunity to join Maasai-guided bush walks, take thrilling night game drives, and immerse yourself in the culture by visiting a nearby Maasai village.
The camp itself is a cozy and intimate setup, consisting of six spacious safari tents, each offering comfort and privacy. The camp’s common area is designed for relaxation, dining, and socializing. The mess tent, a large open-sided canvas structure, serves as both a dining and lounge space. Situated on a low-rise plateau, the tent overlooks the guest tents and the river, offering a serene atmosphere. Inside, the lounge area features rustic sofas, cowhide rugs on the floor, a coffee table, and a tea and coffee station stocked with herbal teas and cold drinks.
Dining is often an open-air, al fresco experience, but you’ll also enjoy meals around a large dining table, where 12 guests can comfortably gather in director’s chairs. If you like, you can even have a warm cup of coffee or tea delivered to your tent in the morning. The vibe at the camp is informal and friendly, with staff eager to share insights about the local area and the Mara ecosystem.
Each of the six safari tents is designed with luxury and comfort in mind. Set on wooden platforms raised above the ground, the tents blend seamlessly into the environment, offering a simple yet effective design. Inside, you’ll find tasteful décor, including brightly colored rugs on the floor, a writing table with a folding chair, and a hanging rail for your clothes.
The en-suite bathrooms come with a flushing toilet, hot and cold running water, and a safari shower. These tents are strategically spaced to ensure privacy, and the verandah outside features two director’s chairs and a small table for relaxing. When heading out after dark, a Maasai guide will accompany you to ensure your safety and provide a sense of security as you move about the camp.
Things to Do at Porini Mara Camp
In addition to the popular morning and evening safari game drives, which are available in both open and closed safari vehicles, this camp offers an exciting opportunity for guided walking safaris. These walks take place across the open plains, with experienced armed guides and rangers who will help you spot wildlife and identify animal tracks along the way. The camp also organizes cultural excursions to nearby Maasai villages, providing a deeper understanding of the local community. For a unique experience, you can even opt for a hot-air balloon safari, complete with a champagne breakfast (for an additional fee). The Maasai guides who accompany you on these safari activities are highly knowledgeable about the terrain and its wildlife. They are committed to ensuring that you have the best chance of seeing animals, all while maintaining a deep respect for the environment and its inhabitants.
Tripadvisor Feedback Porini Mara Camp
I stayed in the Porini camp in March 2025. The hospitality was excellent. We were well taken care of. The food was delicious and the rooms were very comfortable. All individuals - Felix, Edward, Stanley, and Joshua were so kind and enthusiastic.

We visited the Porini Mara camp in early March (2025). Our experience was outstanding. The camp itself is very well run (thanks to Felix), with very good food and comfortable tent based accomodations in spite of the fact that you are in a remote location. The game drives are simply outstanding with highly competent drivers and guides (thanks to Stanley and Edward). We have traveled to other game parks, i.e. Tanzania, and would highly recommend the Porini Mara camp. Without question it is worth the additional expense to visit a private conservancy as opposed to the a national park, as the safari experience is simpy more authentic. Highly recommended.
