Overview of Porini Mara Camp

Porini Camps Masai Mara, Home for True Wildlife Enthusiast

Nestled in the heart of the Masai Mara ecosystem, the Ol Kinyei Conservancy is a Maasai community-managed conservation area teeming with wildlife. This conservancy hosts only two intimate safari camps, Porini Mara Camp and Porini Cheetah Camp. Porini Mara Camp is renowned for its intimate and welcoming atmosphere. The abundant wildlife in the vicinity makes this safari camp a sought-after destination. The surrounding landscape features expansive savannahs, forested patches, natural springs, and rivers. The main Mara Reserve is just a short drive away for those wishing to explore further. Staying within the conservancy offers unique advantages, including Maasai-guided bush walks, exhilarating night safari game drives, and cultural encounters at a local Maasai village. Guests can expect an exclusive safari experience.

The camp comprises six spacious safari tents and a communal area where guests can gather, dine, or relax with a drink. The mess tent, an open-sided canvas structure, serves as both dining space and lounge. Positioned on a low-rise plateau, it offers views of the guest tents and the river. The lounge area features rustic couches, cowhide rugs, a coffee table, and a tea and coffee station with herbal teas and cold beverages. Meals are often enjoyed al fresco, with dinner served at a large table seating 12 comfortably. Morning refreshments can be delivered to your tent. The camp exudes a friendly and informal vibe, with camp staff eager to share insights about the area and the Mara ecosystem.

Each of the six full safari camps and tents is luxurious, spacious, and thoughtfully decorated. Set on elevated wooden platforms, they blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Guests enjoy turndown service and hot water bottles for chilly nights. Inside, tents are adorned with colorful rugs, a writing desk, a folding chair, and a hanging rail for clothes. Each tent includes an en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet, hot and cold running water, and a safari shower. The tents are well-spaced to ensure privacy. The verandah features two director’s chairs and a small table. After dark, a Maasai guide will escort you for safety.

Things to Do at Porini Mara Camp

Beyond the classic walking safaris and early morning and evening safari game drives (available in both open and closed vehicles), the camp offers guided walking safaris. These bush walks take place on the open plains, accompanied by armed guides and rangers who point out wildlife and tracks, providing opportunities for cultural encounters. Cultural visits to local Maasai villages are also available, and guests can opt for a hot-air balloon safari, complete with a champagne breakfast (additional charge). The Maasai guides accompanying you on safari are highly knowledgeable about the land and its wildlife, ensuring you spot as many animals as possible while respecting both the wildlife and the environment.

Tripadvisor Feedback Porini Mara Camp

Porini Mara Camp is situated in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, with access to the Naboisho Conservancy. During our visit, many grazers from the Maasai Mara had migrated into the conservancies. Despite being the 'low' season, we encountered plenty of wildlife. We spotted lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants. Our guides, George and David, were excellent, and we had a fantastic time. My wife and I captured some of our best safari photos. Although we had the option for a game drive in the Maasai Mara, we chose to stay put. The food was delicious, and the camp staff was attentive. This was our third visit to Porini Mara Camp, and it exceeded our expectations in every way.

This is undoubtedly one of my favorite places in Kenya. I've been fortunate to stay here twice, and our game drives have been extraordinary. On our first visit, we encountered a pride of lions on our way back to camp after sundowners. The roaring of the pride was a spine-tingling experience. On our second visit, guided by George, our knowledgeable guide and friend, we witnessed a cheetah hunting and spent an entire day observing a pride of lions with two playful cubs. The staff, the food, the accommodations—everything makes this camp unforgettable.
