The Origins of Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Ol Kinyei Conservancy stands as the inaugural conservancy within the expansive Great Masai Mara Ecosystem. This conservancy emerged from a collaboration between 171 Maasai landowners and a safari operator, highlighting significant community involvement. Here, wildlife roams freely without the hindrance of fences or artificial barriers across Maasai territories. Maasai cattle are now prohibited within the conservancy, allowing the land to rejuvenate from years of overgrazing. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, the conservancy boasts a thriving wildlife population, from gazelles to buffaloes and leopards to lions. With a stroke of luck, you might even spot the elusive wild dog during your visit. The conservancy supports a remarkable biodiversity, showcasing a diverse range of species.

Witness the Great Migration in Masai Mara

A highlight of the year in Ol Kinyei is the spectacle of the Great Migration, showcasing the migration patterns of thousands of gazelles, zebras, and wildebeests as they traverse the conservancy between June and October. Predators such as lions and hyenas follow the migrating herds, creating dynamic predator-prey interactions and a thrilling wildlife experience. In January, the lesser-known Loita Hills Migration sees 100,000 to 250,000 animals pass through Ol Kinyei on their journey to the Naboisho and Olare Motorogi Conservancies, eventually returning to the Loita Hills. The timing of the Loita Hills Migration varies annually, and the number of migrating wildebeest and antelope is not precisely predictable. However, if your visit coincides with the migration, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Arriving a month or two later, in February or March, may coincide with the annual wildebeest calving season.

Accommodation Options

One of Ol Kinyei Conservancy’s most appealing aspects is its low tourist density within the Mara ecosystem. The conservancy hosts only two safari camps, each offering luxurious tented accommodations with modern comforts, including eco-friendly lodges that follow sustainable practices. These exclusive camps provide a luxury safari experience with a variety of safari activities, guided by Maasai experts with deep knowledge of the land and its inhabitants. With a maximum capacity of twelve guests per camp, they ensure an intimate experience. Additionally, both camps adhere to sustainable eco-principles, with one semi-permanent camp receiving a gold eco-rating from Ecotourism Kenya.

Engaging Activities in Ol Kinyei Conservancy

Beyond the land and its wildlife, Ol Kinyei offers enriching experiences led by Maasai guides and trackers who have deep-rooted connections to the region. These knowledgeable individuals share their insights with safari travelers. Whether on a thrilling 4×4 game drive or a guided nature walk led by Maasai guides, you will be taken to prime locations for spotting leopards, hippos, buffaloes, impalas, topis, and other grazers. Renowned for their tracking skills, they will even teach you their techniques.

A plethora of activities awaits during your stay at Ol Kinyei Conservancy. Cultural tours are one of the enriching experiences offered here, providing deep cultural immersion through interactions with the Maasai community. Another cherished activity is the sundowner ritual, a late afternoon tradition featuring delightful drinks and snacks. During your game drive, your guide will find a picturesque spot for you to enjoy the mesmerizing African sunset with a glass of fine wine.
