Quick Facts About Mara Naboisho Conservancy and Wildlife Conservation
Established in 2010, the Mara Naboisho Conservancy is a collaborative effort of over 500 Maasai landowners dedicated to conservation efforts and preserving their land. Spanning 145 square kilometers, it hosts nine distinct safari camps and lodges. Adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve to the southwest, the Olare Motorogi Conservancy to the west, and the Ol Kinyei Conservancy to the east, Mara Naboisho is a haven for responsible tourism. By limiting daily visitors and safari vehicles, the conservancy ensures an exclusive wilderness experience, allowing guests to feel as though they are the only ones amidst the wild.
A Haven for Big Cats
Home to 70 to 100 identified lions, Mara Naboisho is celebrated for having one of the highest lion densities in Africa. The vast savannahs make it easy to observe these majestic big cats. One of the largest lion prides, consisting of 22 members, resides here. Additionally, over a dozen leopards roam the area. The abundance of prey, including elephants, giraffes, wildebeests, and zebras, supports this thriving population of big cats. The conservancy also shelters a rare breed of African wild dogs. Although not directly on the ‘great migration’ path, the migration corridor sees thousands of animals journeying from the Masai Mara National Reserve to the Loita Plains each May-June and November-December.
A Bird-Watcher’s Paradise
While the diverse wildlife on the ground is captivating, the skies above Mara Naboisho are equally mesmerizing. The conservancy is home to one of the highest densities and several unique bird species rarely seen elsewhere. Keep your binoculars ready to spot white-headed buffalo-weavers, northern white-crowned shrikes, pygmy falcons, Von der Decken’s hornbills, bush pipits, and more. While the four-legged inhabitants draw much attention, bird enthusiasts will find the skies and treetops of Mara Naboisho Conservancy a delightful spectacle.
Accommodation in Mara Naboisho Conservancy
With just nine tented camps and lodges within the conservancy, guests are assured of an exclusive and private retreat in a healthy ecosystem. This limited number of accommodations means fewer crowds, no lengthy queues for safari vehicles, and a more genuine safari atmosphere. However, you’re not the only adventurer seeking this unique experience. It’s crucial to plan ahead as these accommodations tend to book up quickly, especially during the peak season from July to October. Once you’ve chosen Mara Naboisho as your destination, securing your preferred camp or lodge should be a priority. Each of the nine camps and lodges offers distinct features, yet they all share a commitment to providing a comfortable, fulfilling, and unforgettable safari adventure.
Activities at Mara Naboisho Conservancy
While the activities available may vary from one camp or lodge to another, most provide a range of safari experiences such as off-road driving, guided nature walks, bush dining, and limited night safari drives. These activities are part of the conservancy’s broader conservation efforts to maintain a sustainable ecosystem and support the local Maasai community. Additionally, visitors have the chance to engage with the local Maasai community by visiting a Maasai manyatta (village). As stakeholders in the conservancy, the Maasai are welcoming and hospitable to guests. Importantly, your stay at Mara Naboisho directly supports the Maasai community, contributing to clean water access, renewable energy initiatives, educational programs, and the empowerment of women in local Maasai communities.
