Just a heads up: because it’s the main event, this is the Masai Mara peak season. The central Masai Mara National Reserve gets crowded. If you prefer quiet sightings, I always recommend visiting the private conservancies that border the reserve.
Lion Time: The ‘Lion Season’ (Jan – Mar)
I personally love sending people here between January and March. I just call it the ‘Lion Season’. It’s a tremendously high-action time. The Mara turns into one huge maternity ward with thousands of baby animals being born. What does this mean?
Predictably, the predators are out! It’s the best time to see lions, cheetahs and leopards hunting and interacting. It’s a dry time too, so the grass is down, making it much easier to spot a cat in the distance. If getting action shots of the big cats is your goal, then this is your window.
The Photographer’s Delight: The Green Season (Apr – May)
Don’t dismiss April and May just because it rains. This is our long rains, and it beautifully transforms the land. This Masai Mara green season safari is lovely; the plains are a deep green carpet, and the light for photography is excellent. You still get plenty of action with all the newborns attracting predators, and the crowds are gone.
This is also the cheapest time to visit the Masai Mara. June, July, August, September and October:

November and December:

The highly unpredictable Mara River crossing is most likely to happen between late July and late September. The truth is, the wildebeest decide when they cross, not us! To increase your chances, book for August or September and spend several full days near the river with your guide.
Should I choose Amboseli or the Masai Mara for my first safari?
If you want the whole, classic safari experience—guaranteed Big Five sightings and high volumes of animals—the Masai Mara is the clear winner. Amboseli National Park is famous for its vast elephant herds and that iconic, spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro. If seeing the mountain is a priority, the best time to visit Amboseli to view Kilimanjaro is during the dry season, when the skies are clearest. If you have the time, try to fit both in!
