The 8-Day Kenya Safari You've Been Dreaming Of

You don’t want a run-of-the-mill trip, you want a real journey of discovery – one that lets you get up close and personal with the real Africa. That’s precisely what this route offers – a perfect blend of Kenya’s most spectacular landscapes & wildlife hotspots, including Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru & the breathtaking Mara. We’ve carefully crafted each day to keep drive times to a minimum, so you spend more time peering over the binoculars than staring at the back of a 4×4.

Day 1 & 2: Nairobi to Amboseli - Where Giants Roam

We’ll kick off your adventure as soon as you land.

Getting to Amboseli from Nairobi

Once you’ve touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), our team will be there waiting to welcome you with a big smile. The drive to Amboseli is as scenic as it is long – about 4 hours or so in a comfortable 4×4. If time is a luxury you can splurge on, you should opt for a quick 45-minute fly-in safari to Amboseli. Faster, yes, but it will dent the wallet a bit.

Amboseli’s Top Attraction: Kilimanjaro Meets Elephants

You’ve probably heard of Amboseli National Park – and for good reason: the sight of those massive-tusked elephants set against the backdrop of towering Mount Kilimanjaro is something that will leave you utterly speechless & make for some truly unforgettable snaps. Of course, we’ll be on the lookout for the Big Five too – although buffalo, zebra & wildebeest are easy enough to spot, lions and cheetahs do pop up from time to time.

Things to Do

We’ve packed your time in Amboseli with plenty of thrilling game drives across those stunning flat plains. Should you want a taste of something different, we can always arrange a visit to a local Maasai village for a healthy dose of cultural immersion.

A Quick Note

We get straight into the action on Day 1 with an afternoon game drive that’ll get those adrenaline levels pumping. On Day 2, we’re out on a full-day game drive – expect us to be heading to the wetlands & Observation Hill in search of those elusive sightings.

Day 3: Heading into the Great Rift Valley - From Amboseli to Naivasha

Today, we make our way from the stark plains of Amboseli into the lush and visually stunning landscapes of the Great Rift Valley.

Making our way to Naivasha from Amboseli

This six or 7-hour drive is a doozy, but it’s definitely worth it. As we pass through Nairobi, we get a glimpse of the truly breathtaking sight of the Rift Valley escarpment descending towards Lake Naivasha.

The main drawcards – Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake teeming with a whole lot of life; its shores are home to loads of waterbirds and an enormous population of hippos. And then there’s Crescent Island, a little slice of paradise – a haven where you can get out and stretch your legs and walk right amongst the zebra and giraffes, no fences to worry about.

What’s on the agenda for this afternoon

We’ll be spending the afternoon mixing it up with both water and land activities – a relaxing boat ride on Lake Naivasha to get up close with the hippos and the fish eagles, followed by a one-of-a-kind walking safari on Crescent Island.

A note to keep in mind

We’ll be on the lake for the boat ride and then on Crescent Island for the walking safari during the afternoon of Day 3, which is as good a transition as it gets after such a long drive.

Day 4: Heading into the thick of it - From Naivasha to Nakuru

Today we’re on a mission – we’re off to find the endangered rhinos.

Getting where we need to go

The drive from Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park isn’t bad at all – about 2 hours max. We’ve got an easy day of travel ahead of us before we start getting into the thick of game viewing.

The highlights – Rhinos, Flamingos & The Big Five

Lake Nakuru is a protected sanctuary for both the black and white rhinos, so we’ve got a really good chance of spotting these two last members of your Big Five checklist. Plus, there are heaps of other games and the sight of all the flamingos (season dependent) and other colourful birdlife is a real treat.

What we have planned for the day

The whole day will be dedicated to a thorough game drive at Nakuru – we’ll be scouring the park’s different habitats – from the lake to the woodland – to make sure you see the rhinos and hopefully even the park’s resident leopard population.

A quick note

We’ll be spending the whole day on a game drive at Nakuru on Day 4.

Day 5, 6 & 7: Nakuru to Masai Mara - The Crown Jewel of a Safari

Get set for the best part of your Kenyan safari – a three-day run in the Masai Mara National Reserve that will blow your mind.

Getting There

The drive from Nakuru takes around 5 to 6 hours, and let me tell you, it’s an experience you won’t forget. You trade in the smooth tarmac for rugged African terrain and get a taste of the real savannah as we enter the legendary Mara ecosystem.

Must-See Attractions: The Big Five, Migration & Big Cats

The Mara is the holy grail of wildlife destinations – you’re guaranteed to see some of the most incredible predators on the planet. And if you time your trip right (July to October), you can witness the epic Great Wildebeest Migration, with millions of animals making their way across the Mara River. Your chances of spotting all five of the Big Five here are basically a done deal.

What We Do

Your days will be action-packed with exciting activities: multiple jeep safaris, optional walking safaris in the surrounding private reserves, and that ultimate bucket-list experience – the Hot Air Balloon Safari, complete with a champagne breakfast to start the day.

A Few Notes

We kick things off with an afternoon game drive on Day 5. Days 6 and 7 are for full-on big game hunting – we’ll be out on the river and focusing on the key predator territories from dawn till dusk.

Day 8 - Transfer to Nairobi - The Bittersweet Goodbye

All good things have got to come to an end eventually, but we still have one more trick up our sleeves.

Last Hurrah

We kick things off with a bit of a farewell get-together – perhaps a quick Maasai cultural tour on the morning of Day 8 (one last chance to get in on that if you somehow managed to miss it the first time around), before we break camp and hit the road or grab your international flight from Nairobi. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you get to the airport with plenty of time to spare and a spring in your step.

Park Highlights - The Bits You Won't Want to Miss

Getting this trip under your belt is a good idea to know what makes each stop worth the trip.

Amboseli National Park

If you’re the sort of person who loves nothing more than taking snaps, then Amboseli is a must-see. The dusty flat landscape here makes it the perfect place to get an unobstructed view of the elephants against the stunning backdrop of Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro.

Lake Nakuru National Park

We head to Lake Nakuru for one particular reason: to see the rhinos in all their glory. As a dedicated sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, this park gives you a really good chance of ticking off that Big Five checklist.

Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island

This place is a world away from the intensity of the game parks – it’s a beautifully peaceful destination that really hits the spot after all that action. The boat safari is a great chance to unwind and take in the sheer number of hippos and get up close and personal with some gentle herbivores on the island.

Masai Mara National Reserve

The Mara is right at the top of the list for any safari in Kenya – it’s where the drama unfolds day after day. The vast, sweeping savannahs and the sheer density of wildlife – especially the big cats – make every game drive a real thrill ride, and it’s a place where you can really see nature in all its glory, particularly when the Great Migration is on.masai mara safari                                                                         Cheetahs

Planning & Logistics: The Nitty-Gritty of Your 8-Day Kenya Safari Tour

Alright, now that you’ve got a sense of where you’re headed, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Getting the details right is what can turn a good trip into a vacation to remember.

The Best Time to Visit: A Down-to-Earth Guide

Picking the right time of year is crucial for two simple reasons: making memories and saving cash.

Peak Season (July to October)

This is when you’ll find the best weather – dry and cool – and get to see an absolute spectacle: the world-famous Great Migration. The terrain is perfect for game viewing, and you’ll see a lot of animals, but don’t expect it to be cheap. This is peak tourist season, after all.

Green/Shoulder Season (January to March, November to December)

I’m a big fan of these months. Prices are generally lower, you’ll avoid the crowds, the scenery is lush and perfect for taking those Instagram pics, and the animal action is fantastic – especially during the calving season in January and February.

Long Rains (April and May)

This is the cheapest time to travel – yes, you read that right. It can get quite wet and the roads can be a bit grim, but you’ll be rewarded with some truly exclusive game viewing experiences – you might even have the whole place to yourself.

Costs and Budget Breakdown

The cost of a safari is never just a simple number.

Price Tiers: Finding Your Perfect Match

We offer a few different options: Budget, Mid-Range, and Luxury safaris. On the budget end, you might be looking at a safari minivan and staying at a lodge just outside the park gates. At the other end of the scale, you’ll be flying between parks and staying in some seriously stylish, all-inclusive tented camps.

What’s Included and What’s Not

A good package will cover all your park entry fees, your full board meals, and a 4×4 Land Cruiser and guide at your disposal. But don’t forget to factor in things that usually aren’t included, like flights, visas, travel insurance and optional activities like the Hot Air Balloon Safari.

Hidden Expenses and Tipping

Tipping is always a good idea for your driver-guide and any lodge staff. We’ll give you a clear idea of what’s expected so you aren’t stuck in a tricky situation.

Accommodation Options: Where to Lay Your Head

You’ve got loads of excellent options for somewhere to rest your head.

Lodges, Tented Camps and Luxury/Boutique Camps

Lodges are like hotels in the bush – all the mod cons and the lot. Tented Camps, on the other hand, are my personal fave – they’re big, canvas-walled rooms on permanent platforms with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms. And then there are the Luxury/Boutique Camps – these are the crème de la crème of safari accommodation – all the luxury you could want, fine dining and a prime spot in the reserve.

Getting Around, The Right Way

How you travel in Africa impacts not just your journey but your wallet, too.

Road Safaris vs Fly-in Safaris – The Great Debate

Road Safaris use rugged 4x4s because they’re more budget-friendly and let you see the local towns and scenery in between parks. They’re the way to go if you like taking your time and exploring the local scene. Fly-in Safaris, on the other hand, are a lot faster and way more expensive, which makes them perfect for those who want every last minute of their time spotting wildlife. Luxury packages often prefer to fly in.

Packing Like a Pro

Don’t overdo it! A few essentials are all you really need.

The Essential Checklist

For game drives, try sticking to neutral colours (khaki, beige, light browns). A wide-brimmed hat and good sunscreen are a must. Sunglasses, insect repellent and a pair of quality binoculars & a decent camera with a good zoom lens are also absolute necessities.

Staying Safe & Healthy

I really want you to enjoy this trip & stay out of trouble.

Vaccinations, Malaria Meds & General Safety Tips

If you’re from India, you’ll need to get a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate before you even think about coming to Kenya. Don’t even think about showing up without it. And yes, we do recommend taking anti-malarial meds. When you’re in the city, though, always be aware of your stuff – even in the parks, with your guide by your side.shots                                                                      Vaccines for travel

Planning Your Travel - All You Need to Know

You’ve got a few specific questions in mind as an Indian traveller – and a generic travel guide just won’t cut it! So, here’s the lowdown.

Getting to Kenya From India

It’s not that hard to get here

Visa Info

Indians have it easy – with the new digital system, you can get an e-Visa online in no time. The good news is that it’s smooth sailing.

Flights

You’re in luck – there are Direct flights from major Indian cities, such as Mumbai and Delhi, to Nairobi, so getting your safari started is a whole lot less stressful.

Money

Most safari lodges will take US Dollars (USD, only paper bills printed after 2015) for payments and tips. You’ll also need some local Kenyan Shillings (KES) for smaller purchases so that you can carry a bit of cash and plenty of USD.

Food & Dietary Requirements – A Top Priority

Let’s be real, food is at the top of the list. You don’t need to stress about having a good meal while you are here.

Vegetarian, Jain, Indian Meals – A Must

We pride ourselves on this service. I can promise you that getting delicious veg, vegan, or Jain food at safari lodges and camps is entirely standard. Just let the lodge know what you need beforehand & they will be ready to go.

Working with Indian-Friendly Operators

We’ve got a lot of experience catering to Indian groups and families. This means we choose camps with either experienced chefs who specialise in Indian food or a track record of preparing high-quality, authentic Indian dishes that people rave about.

Things to Consider

Now, how does this compare to what you’d get back home?

India vs. Africa Safari: How They Stack Up

A Kenyan safari is worlds apart from a tiger-focused trip to an Indian national park. In Kenya, you are in the midst of the open safari landscapes, with so much space to roam. The sheer scale and volume of the game – and that you will be guaranteed to see the Big Five – is what sets the African safari apart.

Group Tours vs Private Ones

Group Tours are super popular among Indian travellers – they are a great social experience, cost-efficient, and a fantastic way for families & friends to travel together. We also offer fully bespoke Private Tours if you would rather travel in style.

Working with a Local Operator vs an Indian Agent

Booking with a local Kenyan operator like us gets you a better price and genuine, hands-on local expertise. While an Indian agent can simplify the logistics from back home, booking direct means no mark-ups from a middleman and a guide who lives and breathes Kenya.

Special Occasions in Kenya

Kenya is the perfect place to celebrate – whether it’s a honeymoon or a memorable family trip.

Honeymoon & Family Safaris

For a real treat, the luxury camps offer exclusive private dining and stunning suites for honeymoon safaris. For family safaris, many camps provide dedicated activities and programs that make the bush both fun and educational for kids.8 days kenya safari                                                                    Honeymoon

Pre & Post-Safari Tips - Nairobi Highlights

Based on my experience, I recommend spending the first and last day in Nairobi to recover from jet lag and ensure a smooth flight out after the safari. After all, most flights from India land in the afternoon and often take off early in the morning. Spending a night at a hotel like 67 Airport Hotel or Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport could be particularly convenient.

If your flight lands at around noon, we can arrange for activities in Nairobi, such as a tour of Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, or even David Sheldrick. It is a great way to get an introduction to a Kenya safari before heading to the central reserves and parks.

Frequently Asked Questions - Your Questions Answered

We know you’ve got queries, so we’re laying them to rest here.

How many days is the sweet spot for a Kenya trip from India?

Eight days is the way to go. You’ll get a chance to really immerse yourself in the highlights like Amboseli, Nakuru, and the Mara without feeling like you’re rushing around trying to cram everything in.

Is Kenya a safe spot for Indian tourists?

Definitely, Kenya’s a top tourist destination, and its national parks are super-safe. Just remember to follow your guide’s advice and exercise usual caution in the busy city centres – you’d do the same in your home city, right?

Can I whip out the Indian Rupees in Kenya?

Sorry, no go. The Rupee’s not widely accepted, so you should be prepared to use either the local Kenyan Shilling (KES) for smaller purchases or US Dollars (USD) for the bulk of your safari expenses.

Which safari camp has the best grub to remind me of home?

It’s a tough call, but the top-end safari camps and lodges that cater to international clients are the best. We often recommend mid-range or luxury camps that know a thing or two about cooking up authentic Indian cuisine.
