Day by Day Thrills on Our 3 Days Masai Mara Itinerary

I’ve crafted a 3-day Masai Mara itinerary that’s an actual wildlife explosion! Every minute is precious on a short, action-packed Masai Mara safari from Nairobi. We make sure you hit the ground running so you can feel the magic of the Mara from the very start.

Day 1: Pickup from Nairobi, Transfer to Masai Mara, & Afternoon Game Drive

Setting the Stage for Unforgettable Adventure! This day is a mix of travel and non-stop excitement. The choice is simple: how do you want to kick things off? Your decision to drive or fly will set the tone for your 3 days Masai Mara package from India.

Choosing Your Path: The Scenic Road Trip vs. Flying in Style

Road Safari – A Classic, Budget-Friendly Choice: Most people opting for a 3 days Masai Mara budget safari start the day with a 7:00 am early start from Nairobi. You’ll then travel for about 5-6 hours in a trusty 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser. Yeah, it’s a long haul, but the breathtaking Great Rift Valley viewpoint is worth the time – you can even stop along the way for a photo op.

Fly-In Safari – For Those in a Rush: If you’re feeling flush and want to make the most of your time, jump on that short 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport (WIL) to the Mara’s airstrips. Although it’s a little pricier, it’s the perfect choice for a 3-day luxury Masai Mara safari from India. And you’ll gain half a day back to focus on what really matters – the game viewing!

The Afternoon Delight: Checking In, Lunch, and Your Inaugural Game Drive

You’ve been waiting for this – and you can barely contain your excitement as you check into your camp. Grab a quick bite to eat and then get ready for the real thing to kick off. The late afternoon (say, from 3:30 pm onwards) is an excellent time for a Masai Mara safari.

It’s a sweet spot – the heat has started to break, the light is all golden and gorgeous, and the animals – especially the cats – start to get going. Expect to see herds of elephants, zebras and maybe even catch your very first glimpse of a lion!

Day 2: Full-Day at Masai Mara National Reserve

Getting Totally Immersed in the Wildlife and Epic Sightings! Now this is the day you get to really dig deep and go on some wild adventures. We’re giving the entire Mara to you for the day, just searching for those magical moments that you’ll be telling all your friends about.

The Hunter’s Hour: Morning and Full Day Plans

We’re up with the sun, as early as it takes to get a good head start, for the Early Morning Drive. Why go so early? Well, this is the time when predators like cheetahs and leopards are getting active, either out hunting or just back from a night’s prowl.

Your guide will pack a great picnic lunch and take you out for a full-on Day Game Drive, deep into the heart of the reserve, to cover as much ground as possible and give yourself the best chance of spotting some incredible wildlife.

Chasing the Herds: A Great Migration Adventure (Seasonal Thrill)

If your trip falls in July and October, well then, your safari has just become a whole lot more epic – you’re off to witness the Great Migration in all its glory. This is one heck of a show, and you’ll be on a mission to find the herds and catch a glimpse of the Mara River crossing.

That’s the real highlight of the trip – and it’s a thrill not to be missed. July to September is the best time to see a river crossing in the Masai Mara, making it the perfect time to visit.

Soaring Above: The Hot Air Balloon Safari

If you’re up for something really special – and want an experience to last a lifetime – toss off the duvet before dawn and get on board the Hot Air Balloon Safari. Watching the savannah turn a gorgeous shade of gold as the sun rises over the plains from up high is just incredible.

And the cherry on top is a cracking good champagne breakfast in the bush after you land – perfect for celebrating an adventure that will stay with you forever.

Day 3: Optional Activities (Morning Game Drive & Maasai Village) & Transfer to Nairobi

More Memories to Take Home – Maasai Culture and Saying Goodbye! It’s your last morning, and we want to make sure it’s one you’ll never forget before we start the journey back home.

Making it Count: A Game Drive or a Glimpse into Maasai Life or Both

After a hearty breakfast, you get to choose how to start the day – one last short game drive or a visit to a Maasai Village/Cultural Experience. And this isn’t just a quick photo stop, it’s the real deal – a genuine insight into the extraordinary lives of the Maasai People

They’ll welcome you with their traditional chants and dancing, making for a pretty unforgettable cultural experience.

The Return: Back to Nairobi Again

Once you’ve said your goodbyes to the Mara, it’s time to head back to Nairobi. Whether you’re taking a road safari back or getting a quick flight, you’ll be back in the city by lunchtime. Either way, you’re bound to be loaded with snaps on your camera and memories aplenty from your 3 days in the Masai Mara – a safari you’ll never forget.

Planning for Your Trip from India: Nitty Gritty Logistics to Know

Putting a trip together from India requires some profound practical know-how. I’ve compiled the lowdown on what you really need to know about booking, costs, and that all-important travel documentation.

Timing is Everything: When to Visit Masai Mara  for the Best Experience

Choosing the correct Masai Mara travel dates can make all the difference. What do you want to see & how much will it cost? It’s also when you go.

Season (July-Oct): This is the drama-filled time of the year due to the Great Migration. Expect that your safari camps will be chock-a-block full, prices will be sky-high, but the action in the wild will be mind-blowing. If you’re planning to visit during this period, book at least six months in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles!

Dry Season (Jan-Mar): If you’re looking for a sweet spot, then this is it. The grass is short, making it easy to spot the Big Five, and the weather is pretty fantastic. It’s also quieter than the peak season.

Green Season (Apr-Jun): If the cost of a Masai Mara safari is a primary concern, then this might be your time to shine. Prices are lower, the crowds all but disappear, and the scenery is lush & green. Plus, it’s an excellent time for Bird Watching as well.

Where to Lay Your Head: Accommodation Options & Budget Tiers

Where you sleep can really make or break the safari experience. We have options that fit every sort of traveller.

Luxury: If you’re after the ultimate safari experience, then you’ll want to look into some of the exclusive, boutique, five-star Tented Camps – often in the quieter private conservancies. These come with private guiding, gourmet meals, & the ultimate in comfort, reflected in the higher price point of a 3-day Masai Mara luxury safari from India.

In the Middle: These are great value, comfortable and offer a fantastic atmosphere. They include lovely Lodges & Tented Camps that provide the standard all-inclusive Full-Board experience most holidaymakers love.

On a Shoestring: For you thrifty travellers looking to keep the costs down, take a look at simple tented camps, or opt for a Group Joining safari. This allows you to share the costs of the 4×4 Safari Vehicle/Land Cruiser and your accommodation, keeping your trip as affordable as possible.

Getting the Inside Track – Why Join a Conservancy?

If you can stretch your budget a bit, consider looking at the properties that neighbour the central reserve – they’re in Private Conservancies.

Masai Mara National Reserve: This is the central, public park – though it gets busy, and there are some restrictions on what you can do. You pay a Park Fee when you get in.

Private Conservancy: You’ll pay a bit more – but you get an experience that’s all your own. Off-road driving and Night Drives are available, making it much easier to get up close and personal with the wildlife.

Let’s Get Real: Cost Breakdown & Budgeting for Your Next Adventure

Time to talk turkey – when you’re planning a trip, you need a clear idea of costs.

Package Cost: Generally, a quality 3 days Masai Mara package from India (think mid-range safari on the road) will work out at between $915 and $2760 per person. If you’re looking for luxury options, there are plenty to choose from – drop me a line for the lowdown on the Masai Mara safari cost in rupees (INR) based on your travel dates.

Fees & Flights: Don’t forget to factor in that international flight from India – and the daily Park Fees (which come out at around $100–$200 USD per adult).

The Extras: If you want to do the Hot Air Balloon Safari (and who wouldn’t!), budget an extra $400–$500 USD per person.

Getting You to the Game Drives – Travel from India to the Kenyan Bush

The logistics of getting you from your city in India to the heart of the action in Kenya are straightforward, but they do require a bit of planning.

International Flights: You’ll need to fly out of major hubs like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. If there aren’t any direct flights to Kenya from India, don’t worry – you can get connecting flights that aren’t too bad.

The Next Leg: Once you’re in Nairobi, embark on your Nairobi to Masai Mara 3-day safari, either by driving or taking a domestic flight. When you get to the Mara airstrip or gate, your guide will be waiting for you in the trusty old 4×4 Safari Vehicle/Land Cruiser.

Suitcase Smarts: Packing for the Bush

Don’t pack too much! When it comes to a safari, comfort and practicality are key.

Clothing: What you should be wearing: neutral colours like khaki, olive, and brown. And please keep in mind you’ll need a fleece for those chilly mornings, as well as some light tops for when it gets scorching hot.

Essential Gear: Binoculars are a must – no question. And your camera: it’s worth investing in a good zoom (telephoto lens) because that’s just going to make a world of difference.

Health Kit: Don’t forget to pack solid sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and proper insect repellent. And of course, any medication you might need.

Unique Experiences: Add-Ons That Make Your Safari Truly Unforgettable

If you want to make your safari the “safari of a lifetime”, then you’ll want to consider these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Hot Air Balloon Over the Savannah: A View You’ll Never, Ever Forget

Imagine just floating along above the plains – just before sunrise – and having the most breathtaking view of all the wildlife below. It’s a real photography buff’s dream come true. And to top it all off, you get to do it all again with a champagne breakfast on the savannah afterwards. Iconic – that sums it up.

Immersing Yourself in Local Culture: Getting to Know the Maasai

Visiting a Maasai village is a must, really – it’s the only way you can get a genuine feel for the local culture. You get to step away from the jeep, meet some locals and really get a feel for their way of life – all while contributing to the community, which is just a fantastic example of responsible tourism appropriately done.

Checking in on the Birds: Bird Watching in the Mara

Even if you’re all about those Big Cats, the birds are absolutely amazing in the Mara. We’re talking over 470 species. And your guide will be able to point out all sorts of fabulous birds of prey and brightly coloured lilac-breasted rollers – so even a short trip to the Maasai Mara won’t go to waste.

Capturing the Perfect Shot: Photography Tips from a Local Guide

So here’s the thing: the light for photos is always best during the golden hour – that’s the first and last hour of the day when the sun is still out. And that’s when you get those lovely soft, warm colours in your photos. Now, just remember to be patient, use that telephoto lens, and most importantly, listen to your guide. Animal comfort always comes first – need I say more?

Travel with Confidence: Safety, Health & Ethical Considerations

We want you to be able to travel with your peace of mind intact. The more you know upfront, the more likely you are to have a smooth, worry-free trip.

Keeping Safe: Your Safari Safety Rules – Because Safety Always Comes First

Safety is something we never take for granted. When you’re out on a Game Drive, please keep your seatbelt fastened until your guide indicates it’s perfectly safe to get out. And when you’re at one of our unfenced camps, be sure to keep a close ear out for the security team’s advice – they know what’s best for your safety. And if you’re planning on taking a midnight stroll, for goodness sake, ask for an escort!

The Mara’s wild – it’s what makes it so special – and we want to make sure you can enjoy it without a care in the world.

Health First: Don’t Get Caught Out By Malaria, Vaccinations or Visa Woes

When you’re on safari, looking after your health is more important than just about anything else. Unfortunately, the Mara is a Malaria risk area, so make sure you get the best advice from your doctor on prophylaxis beforehand. You’ll probably need to get vaccinated too – check it out.

Additionally, the photo support directly assists the community in coming here without needing to sort out their Kenya ETA first – it’s a must-have for Indian passport holders.

Travelling Sustainably: Be A Good Egg, Travel Responsibly

How important is it to be a responsible traveller? So, choose lodges and tour operators that are actually doing some good for local conservation and local employment.

And if you get the chance to visit a Maasai Village while you’re here, it’s a great way to support the community directly. We’re all in this together, and we all need to do our bit to protect the beautiful Masai Mara National Reserve.

Demerits of a 3 Days Masai Mara Safari

A three-day Masai Mara tour is popular and an efficient choice when you don’t have a lot of time to travel. However, it has its own shortcomings. First, the 3-day safari offers a limited time at the park. For instance, if you travel by road, you end up spending about 6 hours on the road on the first and the last day, which leaves you with a total of 4 game drives at the reserve.

Due to the limited time, you get less time to find all the animals in the reserve. You may miss seeing a leopard or even a hunt during a 3-day safari. I had some guests who wanted to witness the river crossing in 2023, but unfortunately, they didn’t get to see it due to time constraints. The wildebeest were crossing a day before and two days after their safari.

The other issue with the 3-day tour is that choosing a flight significantly increases the cost. You will have more time at the reserve, but you’ll end up spending more because you’ll need to pay an extra USD 400 for the round-trip flight and the mandatory fee on day 3, as you’ll be taking the flight within the reserve. This can increase the safari cost to around USD 600 during the peak season.

FAQs - Your Quick Planning Guide

Here’s a quick rundown of the most frequently asked questions when people provide their 3-day Masai Mara Safari.

Have 3 days been enough for a proper safari experience?

Three days is the perfect amount of time for a focused trip. It gives you two whole days of game viewing, which is plenty to see the Big Five and feel like you’ve really been immersed in the wilderness.

How much will a 3-day trip from India cost me?

Expect to spend around $1000-$3000 per person for a quality 3-day safari package, but keep in mind this doesn’t include the cost of additional activities or accommodations. If flights from India. We can provide a more precise quote in INR once we have your exact dates and preferences. Please reach out to us to discuss further.

When is the absolute peak time for Indian travellers to visit the Mara?

If you want to see the Great Migration in all its glory, then aim to visit between late July and October. But if you don’t mind waiting until the weather is perfect and the predators are on the prowl, then January to March is a great alternative.

Do I need a visa or any special travel documents for Kenya?

Yes, if you’re an Indian citizen, you will need to apply online for the digital Kenya ETA for Indian passport holders before you travel. It’s a must for entry into Kenya.

Got 3 days – are the Big Five on?

The chances are incredibly high! The Masai Mara is packed with lions, elephants, buffalo and leopards – the rhinos are the trickiest to spot, but with three days of solid game drives, you stand a good chance of spotting one.

What’s the difference between a Reserve and a Conservancy?

A private Conservancy offers a much more exclusive game viewing experience – with fewer vehicles, you might even get a photo style game drive. Plus, with a Conservancy, you can do things like night drives, whereas the central Masai Mara National Reserve has those banned.

Do I really need to take the Hot Air Balloon safari?

It’s an extra cost, but if you can swing it, then the Hot Air Balloon safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it gives you a totally new perspective on the savannah. It’s worth considering if the budget allows.

What sort of safari vehicle will I be in?

You’ll be cruising around in a rugged but comfortable 4×4 Land Cruiser/Safari Vehicle equipped with a pop-up roof for excellent game viewing and photography opportunities.

Is it Safe to Drink Tap Water in the Masai Mara?

No, it’s not safe to drink tap water. Your best bet is to stick with bottled water provided by your camp or guide – they should sort you out. Your safari vehicle will also be stocked with plenty of fresh, bottled drinking water.

Which Indian Cities to Fly Out of for the Best Connections to Nairobi?

Mumbai and Delhi have the best flight options and connections into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

Insider Information for 3 Days Masai Mara Safari

Here, I will give you some inside information that can make your Masai Mara safari better. First, the roads inside the Masai Mara National Reserve can be bumpy and dusty during the dry season, which can make your safari uncomfortable. This is when you need a good vehicle with shock absorbers and a skilful driver. Always ensure you insist on having a reliable and well-maintained vehicle before booking your safari.

A professional guide is always on the radio to ensure you don’t miss a great action happening on the other side of the reserve. In addition, the guide should be aware of the best and least crowded route to follow to reach the section with the action swiftly.

The national reserve has official opening and closing times, which are from 6 am to 6 pm. If the gate closes before you exit, you will pay a fine. Due to this, the guide needs to manage the time properly by exiting at least 10 minutes before closing. For the entry, inform the guide to leave the camp a few minutes before 6 am so you can access the reserve by 6 am.
